Is there any cityrail trains (both available and in the works) out there, apart from the M, S and red rattlers?

The Endevour and 620/720 railcars are avaliable by searching for Davido

There is also another train in development by davido which is very anticipated by we have to wait for davido to work his magic on it first.(vsets)

Signal Naming Query

Hey all,

Been busy working on a short section of a Cityrail-style suburban route, taking inspiration/ideas from the North Shore line. It's basically an experiment to see if my urban construction is any better than my rural construction. First, a few WIP shots, then a quick question.

nswurban1.jpg

^Overview of the platforms. At the top is the Local platform, followed by the Down line, and then the Up platform line.

^Looking north from the Local platform, which may eventually extend to a Hornsby-style station/yard. The area on the right will eventually form the main commercial area, residential areas being to the left of shot.

^Looking in the opposite direction, along the Down line, towards the 'City.'

Now, my question:
I'm taking ideas from the North Shore line, as i said, and i was looking at a signaling diagram for Lindfield-Killara section, and was wondering if someone could explain the naming conventions, as i would like adapt them for my own route, when i understand them.
The signal names from Lindfield, traveling from Sydney to Hornsby are LD3, SH9.13, SH9.63 and GN1. The LD3 and GN1 i get: they're manual signals 1 & 3 controlling the interlocking at Gordon(GN) and Lindfield(LD.) What i do not understand are signals SH9.13 & SH 9.63. The SH is Shore, i think, but the numbers don't make any sense to me.

At first i thought they were distance-based indicating they were roughly 500 metres apart, but that's not it, as the distance given for them is 14.741KM and 15.513KM, which is a distance of roughly 800 metres.

So can anyone tell me what the numbers mean?

Appreciate any assistance,

Matt.

If they're not km's, they're probably miles from Central.

Ryan

I thought that too, but that doesn't really make any sense. For one, where in Aus do we use imperial measurements any more, and if they are miles, then the numbers would be higher, as 1 mile is approximately 1.6K's. So the signal number would be a bit higher.

Thanks for the reply though,

Matt.

Signallers and Signal Electricians are not like you and me - I am fairly sure they are miles.

You got that right! Using an online measurement converter, it appears that they may be miles, after all. They're off by 1-2 hundred metres, but that's close enough for me.:hehe:

Unless someone comes up with a better explanation, i'll go with that for naming my signals.

Edit: Also my maths is off.:hehe: What i said before is incorrect, as if they are miles, then the number would be lower not higher, as i incorrectly stated. The signal numbers are lower than their corresponding KM location, so, they probably are miles, then.

Cheers,

Matt.

Pete,

Thanks for the reply, and link. It'll come in handy.

Did some more checking, on a few diagrams of the metropolitan area, and it appears automatic signal designations are the mileages from Central, but the odd thing is that they are off by 1 to 2 hundred metres in just about every case.

Can anyone offer any explanation for this, as i am highly intrigued.

Matt.

Don't ask me...I only work here!!

mattm,
I am only guessing here as I don't know the area but it could be that they have been moved over time. We have a similar system in QLD for automtic signals. Sometimes with trackworks or work on overhead structures etc. a nearby signal may have to be relocated for better sighting or because it is now in the way of the new structure. This could be the case in the area you are modelling. Or it just could be they weren't too good at converting between miles and kilometers. As I said only a guess but you never know.

PostScript. After I'd posted, noticed patchy had got in before me. Nice to see some screens from north of the border coming in. Thanks patchy!!

A read about a cityrail Tangar being made for trainz. Does anyone know about it? :udrool:

Gone, most likely. If it's the one that was being developed in conjunction with the Cityrail route that covered just about everywhere, it's dead along with the route.

Edit: Yeah, that project is dead and buried, for some time now, unless there's been any recent updates (within the last year)?

Just notifying those who care that I'm still alive. :hehe: Tis' my birthday today, turning 14...

I feel old now...

Well, great shots everyone! Look foward to seeing those GrainCorp 48s on the DLS, David.;)
Thanks,
Mitch

Happy B'day. You should probably put that info in your profile, so we can see for ourselves, and not have to be told.

Cook and Patchy,

Nice shots, even if Patchy shows a bit too much QR.:hehe:
