Davido,

Great images, have already planned which lines the V Set will run on in my route. Mattm, thanks for helping with the FreighCorp formation date. I will do a 1985 - 1995 version of my route afterwards, or shoud i just extend my route to include the content before 1960, past 1960 and on to 1990?? I will post images of my route up shortly. Please give feedback on my route. Its my first try, so if a bit dodgy, you know why.

Thanks, SARRailways :):D:):D

Rod, it's a vicious cycle. I originally started making stuff because I wasn't happy with American locos hauling British hoppers on my local layout. So I all but abandoned route building as I delved into content building. Now, when I start route building again, I find more stuff I'd like to have on my layout needs to be made.....but I'm resisting (so far). :D

Davido, once again your screen shots are great. Really like to attention to detail.

Resiting the urge to do more content. HEHE. I have decided to give content creation a go, Got myself a copy of 3dsmax 2009 from my uncle since he upgraded to 2011 version. And actually finding it not to hard ( Something my pee brain actually understands hehe). Mostly been doing houses from around my area to get my skills moving in the right direction.

A few screen shots from my continuation of Port Levendale branch line route.

Dear SAR

I am quite shocked that Redbull has passed away becuase I personally know the commings and goings of trainz in South Australia.

I have downloaded his SAR4Ttoo and have attempted to back track them to the 1950's when SAR broad gauge steam was still making its mark but now in this sad news, I can't finish my SAR Adelaide, Hills & SE route or upload them!:'(

What do I do now?

Hi Trainzerz!!

I had no idea that Redbull had passed away. Its a shame that his route was not finished, I was looking forward to it. I know about the other routes, I have downloaded them. I remeber going on sarail's website SAR Trainz and seeing that someone wrote that they were continuing the SARN4T Routes and making the Victor Line and many of the other country lines such as Port Pirie, Mount Gambier etc. Sorry to hear (especially so late) that Redbull has passed.

Thanks, SARRailways

Before I start the real thread on this, what do people think?

Aussie monthly route building competition:

Small self-contained routes can be great fun, and a good introduction to new Trainzers. And, even if you don't 'win', it just means another Aussie route one the DLS, so who can complain? In a way, we all win.

The rules are as follows:

1 - Each competition shall last one month. and then a judging thread will be started for a fortnight after the month. As soon as each competition is finished though, the next one starts. I say that if this works out, we just keep the ball rolling!

2 - Each route must be able to be uploaded to the DLS. Hence why this is the only one that will allow '06.

3 - Voting is by poll, from the whole community. I would hope that people judge with regards to quality, interest, fun, and such. With this first round being the only one allowing routes made for 06 and below, I hope folk don't judge the routes which are well made but don't use the 'bells and whistles' of '09 and '10.

4 - Between five and nine baseboards. No more, unless they're just some background scenery with some hills and trees and such. This also helps with folk that are new to Trainz, and are interested in releasing a route.

5 - As long as permission is granted by the Author, using modules as a part of the routes from others is fine. It would help if folk who have created small modules to mention in the main thread if they're willing to let anyone use/modify their modules if they have a good few out there.

6 - I'll leave it open for the creators of the routes to chose what version of Trainz to use. That way, we don't exclude people who aren't fond of the latest versions. I will stress though that there is a deadline for uploading content for '06 and older. Which means this first round will be the only one allowing old versions of Trainz. Keep in mind though that entries for TC3, '09 and 10 will probably end up with more votes as there are more things that can be done, and that after september, 06 and below uploads to the DLS will be disallowed according to Auran.

7 - Non DLS content can be used, provided that each author includes links to where the content is available. I would also think that it would be best if using non-DLS content to stick to the more prominent sites, which are not likely to vanish in a few months.

8 - The route must be functional enough to add sessions, and include one basic session merely having the locos and rollingstock where they should be as a separate upload. This means people can download the session, and get all of the stock with it.

9 - There will always be a theme. Although this may change in the future, we'll have a different state with each competition that the theme of the route shall be based upon. It'd also be fantastic if people who don't know much about railways in other states to give things a go anyway. For example, there aren't many Tasmanian style routes on the DLS. So, if one of these competitions ends up being based in Tasmania, why not help everyone out and make a good attempt and creating their impression and give folk from the smaller states some good routes?

10 - I see no problems with people 'buddying up' and making a route together as a team. Keep in mind though, if you work as a team the prize must be shared evenly. That's up to the group. Any arguing or such if you have a group of people working on one entry is none of my business.

11 - Anyone can enter any time during the competition 'period', but no unfinished routes will be voted upon. Keep in mind that if you don't finish one, you can always see if you can use it for the next entry.

12 - Progress of routes and notifications of updates posted in the main thread will likely attract more interest from the people who vote. Keep that in mind.

13 - Upon release of the routes at the end of the month OR completion of a route, you must make a post with three screenshots, a description, links to the route on the DLS, and all links or instructions for people to get non DLS content.

14 - No payware.

A few last notes: I would hope that during the two week voting period everyone should try out each entry, unless they don't have the appropriate version of TRS. This is also a friendly competition, so help each other out if need be! :)

Don't get too bogged down with small sections or try to go overboard with everything! Think of an idea that relates to the theme and try to stick to it. This will make it easier to finish the route on time. And always ask for help if you need it!

Oh, and if you want to make a prototypical route, I see no problems. Just keep in mind that proto routes take up much more time.

If there are enough finished entries, I may increase this prize, and include smaller 2nd and 3rd place prizes.

If there is only a a very small amount of entries, I'll not bother with future competitions. If a good amount of folk enter and release their routes, this may end up with bigger prizes.

If there are problems with the DLS at the end of the competition, then the voting period will be extended appropriately.

Ed... just a couple of things.

1. Non DLS content... how do I know what is DLS and non DLS?? Not trying to be a smartarse, but my recent experience in uploading a modular route left me with some non DLS items where I was caught unaware.

Describing my situation - I have accumulated items from far and wide over the years, across multiple versions of Trainz/TRS/TS, using 4 different PCs. Now when I'm in surveyor building away, I've no mental recollection of what came from where... or when for that matter. Therefore I could not supply a list of non DLS downloads until after the fact. Is it acceptable to do after the fact?? I don't think I'd be the only person in this boat.

2. Frequency... I think a monthly competition is overkill, and has a high likelihood of fizzling out after the initial novelty has worn off. It's just human nature. Also, unless you're Muliebuck :p , monthly can be a stretch for someone who does not spend a reasonable amount of daily/weekly time in the Sim.

I believe you'll get a higher participation rate if the frequency was less. Example... bi-monthly... or even Quarterly, where the comp runs for two months and there is a month break in between. Advantages to this is.
- The more sporadic users will feel comfortable putting their hand up to enter (increasing participant numbers).
- Allows more time for those who are working on other projects (also increasing participant numbers).
- A month off; would be good to throw ideas around for the next theme, for the route builders recharge the batteries, and from the human psyche perspective simply have something to look forward to (extend the lifespan of your idea).

Just my thoughts anyway... neutral and unbiased thoughts too, as I would be unlikely to enter.

hi all

i agree with forest runner

his suggections sound good.
i too am like him with the content that i have picked up from all over the place

cheers

I mentioned that non-dls content must be from a reputable site, and all content needed listed with the entry. If an entry has non-dls content that is not listed in the final submission, they would need to ammend that or be disqualified. For the most part though, most Aussie content are either on the DLS or on reliable sites. The bigger European sites show no signs of stopping. I have to admit, there is some great content on those sites that can really help Aussie routes.

I think a limit to the baseboards limits the problem of folk not having enough time. Various themes could have this rule altered into less baseboards, although the first theme I'd like to kick off with seems appropriate for a month.

I might think about a larger comp, longer lasting with a bigger prize running alongside?

I'd also hope that with the first experiment, enough folk catch on. If more folk do enter and finish, I would slowly increase the prizes to negate an 'novelty' issues.

With folk interested in having a break, then why not simply enter into the next months comp?

I also think that it'll be a good way for newcommers to add something to the DLS and be proud, even if the 'veterans' get the prize.

I will note that the prize for what I am offering is quite generous for a friendly comp.

I'm quite certain I'll add a rule that at least one baseboard must be of a certain height, so that they could be merged. It would be nice if, over say six comps, a few rural industrial routes could be merged from one comp, and then perhaps merged only a mainline comp entry. Of course, I want to keep diversity up.

Does anyone have any more opinions or critique on my thoughs in this post and the last?

Trent,

the shots of your Port Levendale route look quite nice. I particularily like the park. I wonder where that idea came from, eh?;) If you don't mind, could i have the KUID no's/names of the objects used in the making of that park?
Also, i was wondering what, if anything, you have done with NSW Nilligottim that i sent you the other day? Would be interesting to see what you managed to achieve with it.

Davido, more Mullet Creek shots? They look very realistic. Keep up the good work.

Matt.

Hello Matt,

Thanks for the comment on the route. It's actually turning into more than I expected hehe. ( Thinking of making it a separate branch line route, as its detailed far better then my other fictional I have going)

I'll dig up the kuids and post them here later today.

Edit : This is all the park is made up of, excluding a few built in Gum Tress here and there.

Fence - Treated Pine Log kuid:69937:200044 - Built In 2010
Picnic Area - Kuid:1942:39030 - Built In 2010
Playground - Kuid:53695:58069
Public Restroom #3 - Kuid:2:120376:1010:1 - DLS
Skatepark - Kuid:2:97008:29345:1 - DLS
And a few of Neoklai's NPC from their website - http://neoklai.ucoz.ru/ possibly some on DLS, but not sure - Kuid:370528:******* Author: Neoklai75

Your NSW Nilligottim, is under going a few minor changes atm and then get some texturing done etc. Hope to have a few screen shots up this weekend :) Dying of the flu this week, so I still off work. But I just cant sit at the PC very long as I ache head to toe atm.

Cheers

I'm not positive (what I am saying) is true, However I thought when you saved a route you also automatically save a config file (well that is true) And that config file lists all the kuids you used in your new map.

I think you can then check these kuids off against the Download Station tab in Content Manager Plus. Clicking on the kuid column heading sorts all kuids into number order, and you tick off the assets as you find them. Those not ticked can be searched for here http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/DLS.php
Remembering to tick off trs2004. If they show up they can be ticked off. You now have assets to mark as not being on DLS, probably replace them, is the best bet, unless you do know where they can be found.
This will have some complications as not everything included in 2006 is available in 2009 or 2010. So the final test downloading the kuids you could not find in Content Manager (Downloads) at the Download site listed above will only check kuids up to your last registered copy. This of course should be ok, because you should not have newer files than you are registered to have ;)

Fair enough mate. I was just, curious is all. I mean what i say about the route, too. It looks really nice. The towns are getting me kind of jealous, though. I'm trying for something small like that, but i find myself trying to cram to much into the scene, and it never looks quite right.

Matt.

From what I've seen the Download Station tab only lists what is available for you to Download - ie if it's already Installed it will not show in this tab.

That said, I guess one can save all the route's non-built in Assets elsewhere (folder/drive/flash stick ets). Delete all of those Assets via Content Mangler... that would be an instant DLS vs non DLS revelation I guess. Then of course recommit all the "saved elsewhere" Assets in Content Mangler. Just speculating anyway.

Hi all, I have just got myself a copy of Trainz 2010 today :) Woohoo! Nice shots everyone ... look forward to contributing some new shots soon ...

Hi all,

Thought i'd post some shots, rather than just comment on everyone's work.

A few shots from my newest WIP, Kangurra, which i will eventually (i hope, fingers crossed:o) join up to my other finished modules, Leycester and Wallah Flats, and the 'other one', Nilligottim. Maybe, hopefully; i want to, and building modular sections seems to make it a bit easier.

Anyway, enough chitchat; here are the pics:

A few shots of 3526 on an early morning passenger service headed towards the junction at Nilligottim, on the Main Southern line.

And while i have it in my mind, what would provide a decent run between stations on a branchline? Somewhere between 10-15 boards, or more? I want a nice long run between stations, but i don't want to get too bored with the whole detailing of middle of nowhere landscapes.

Matt.

Matt - with regards to "detailing the middle of nowhere", if you can find a satisfactory way to landscape and vegetate the boards, keep your interest up by finding small scenes to build - I'll build a farm, and have someone hanging out the washing, or walking to the outhouse or something. Even if nobody notices the little scene, you can know it's there and appreciate it. It helps you to avoid the monotony.

I dunno, YMMV, but it's a hint.

Hey guys i been to the Junee round house today it was great we talked with the poeple there about the history i have phots of things and i brought lots of stuff and posters and picked up information of the line and the old drivers and the nsw looks back in the old days before my time.

or have a place to vist and get more history please let me know or PM me.

Have fun guys i will like to talk some time waiting here for those poeple with history of there days.

bye for now
Jack

Raichase, thanks for the thoughts. It's something to keep in the back of my mind fro when i start building the several modules needed to join up my operation-centered modules to each other.

Also, another thought occured to me, while i was starting to texture my next module, with regards to my choice of textures. To those people, if any, who downloaded Wallah Flats or Leycester, could i ask what you thought of the textures? Basically what i want to know is if they combined in such a way as to be believable; or should i look at using a few more textures in my work?

The textures i used fairly constantly were:
Sandstone3; oz_stoneface, oz_rockydirt; oz_grassbrush; dry_brown_dirt; oz_dirt_darker; oz_dirt; oz_blotchy_grass; grass_a3; grass_a_b; and dry_longgrass_a.

Do these textures combine for a realistic look, or should i look at including a few more for a more realistic feel to my work?

EDIT: For those who haven't seen it, my texturing looks like this:

textureexamplesurveyor.jpg

^What it looks like through Surveyor/Driver.

mmtextureexample.jpg

^through the minimap.

Thanks for any input,

Matt.
