Ron, Boronia #5 tunnel was part of the original deviation of the Cowan Bank, the final tunnel before the top of the bank at Hawkesbury. The tunnel closed due to a deviation with reduction of the grades during duplication in 1909. All were built with portals large enough for double track, although #5 only ever saw single track. The other four tunnels remain open to this day.

Enfield, you say? I have a railway stories book with a poem in it about one engine in particular from Enfield... I don't suppose you've heard of 1174?:o

When you're signing on at Enfield and they meet you at the door,
And they tell you that your engine is 1174
You can hear the driver grumble; you can hear the fireman roar...
Why? Just look in the repair book of 1174.

'Faulty valves and pistons', 'burnt-off smokebox door',
'Engine steaming badly'... that's 1174.
God knows why they run her, but the bosses know what's best,
She'll be hours late any time they run her to the west.

And if they put her on a north job, you can always safely bet
That she'll end up in a siding somewhere up near Morriset.
Try to take her 'cross the mountains where she really has to climb!
By the time you get to Glenbrook you're an hour behind time!

I have struggled, sworn and sweated, I have tried to get her through
But I always feel like quitting when I get to Warrimoo!
'Cos we're facing those Blue Mountains and we'll do the best we can
But to make that engine steam well is a task beyond a man!

I take up that damn shovel, off come my overalls,
And I know that I'll be buggered when we get to Wentworth Falls.
As we struggle on to Lithgow, we swear and curse our fate,
And 1174 is just exactly three hours late.

It's a number that will haunt me and haunt me evermore,
For it doesn't matter what I do... it's 1174.
One night my dear wife said to me, "Your hands are burnt and sore!"
I said, "Yes, I've been to Lithgow on 1174."

She gave me perfumed soap for them, the best she could procure,
It's called '4711'... just like 1174!
I bought a ticket in the lottery, thought my luck would change for sure,
The winner was 1175... I had 1174!

Disgusted I enlisted and went off to the war
And my regimental number was 1174.
And when when the war was over I came back to work once more
And they sent me off to Lithgow on 1174.

FACT: 1174 was later re-numbered as a 54 Class.

tis a great little poem , attributed by Ron Preston to a driver by the name of Frank Brown. It is one of two that he wrote about that engine.

the notorious 1174 was eventually corrected - its steaming problems were attributed to a mis-aligned blast pipe, and lived a long and useful life after correction

it is still with us and resides at Springwood, bearing its post 1924 number - 5461

Third time lucky Matt! It's the Holsworthy branch.
This is the real photo for comparison. The working was a Scouts special in the 60s.

Gee are those Kids wearing togs?? Were they using the bridge girder as a slide? into the river?? No!! how would they explain the rust burns :D
I see you left them out of your trainz scene OH&S eh? :D

Cheers
Rod
wait the one at the top might be shielding his eyes, or aiming a camera ;)

I think those kids would be watching/photographing these strange intruders into the domain of tank engines. The coaches are also a good deal larger than the usual dogboxes and platform end cars. Their lack of presence in my Trainz scene is rather due to members of the local constabulary appearing.

Having grown up in the Liverpool area I remember that bridge was always being used by kids to jump off and into the Georges river below, hopefully missing the weir not far beyond the bridge  . Sadly, while the bridge piers are still there, the bridge itself has been consigned to history. Strangely, I never heard of anybody getting hurt jumping off the bridge.

Railwayz, I agree it is a shame that the bridge itself has been removed. It could have formed part of a nice walking trail, if designed correctly.
As of 2/10/2010, the concrete piers were still extant, although the steel supports have since been removed.

I wonder if it still could be converted into something useful? Perhaps part of a bike route for people living in the nearby suburbs to travel to Liverpool?

I'm not sure how it would all tie in with the two new lines and one new platform going through there, but I wouldn't think it would be that hard to extend the concourse a little more to allow access to the CBD.

OH&S would have a fit seeing that photo, but yes, I've done similar in my younger years, was much fun, but these days, well, not so much fun :)

never mind the bridge, you should have seen the crap and garbage that was routinely dumped into the river upstream. It's a wonder those kids didn't grow two heads and glow in the dark.

Decided to experiment with using splines to form odd shapes, I built this. Can any of the carriage experts on the site guess what type (not code) it is?

Getting back on track....

Getting a little of topic here, aren't we, people?:p

The back end of a freighter disappears into the fog north of Wallarah, on a wet summer morning:

the interlocking huts and over ride phone look great. I will have a look and see what else i might have that the budding NSW modeller can use.
Also i sent you an email bill hope you got it have had a few internet hassles.

The A8 station building with signal box is available, only in 2010 sorry, but you should try changing the build numbers to see if it works in earlier versions. It's a very basic model, so you might not have problems with the build number.

Thanks Mitch. Boronia No.5 is an experiment in photographic modules. Sorry, but that guess was taken by Matt. Matt, geographically, you're getting closer. I may have to try modelling Camden. I would need a DEM though.... I've got the maps, etc for it, but no idea how to make them into a DEM.
.

if you need a DEM map for the Camden Branch, i'll whip you up one and you can go for your life
just need an idea of the path of the line,i have footage of the last train to run this branch but it dosn't help much

cheers,

the line used to run on the north side of the road right next to it for about 3/4 of the length. then at the old Hume highway it crossed over and ran about 500 meters to the west until the river where it came back next to the road again. all in all I think it was about 16km

cheers
