Hey Guys,

I just had a look on the DLS and Davido has left us some new toys to play with; some of Natvanders Candy livered NSW carriages :D . Just downloading them now! :udrool:

A very big thanks to Cardiff Workshops yet again!

Cheers,

Matt

Matt, thanks for the heads up. I thought that Natvander lost his carriages along with the route he was working on in a HDD crash? I suspect Davido may have had a beta that he has brought up to the CWS standards?

EDIT: Just had a play around with them on my layout in progress. Up to the usual standard, I would note. The nicest surprise I've seen on the CWS content recently is that when uncoupling carriages/wagons, the air hoses drop down, and when coupled up, they connect. Nice little touches like that make this less of a game, and more of a rail sim.

I've noticed that my abilities with a camera have not translated into ability with a mouse and "print screen" button, but here we go...

After the midday freight from Sydney has arrived:

Also Trent, how's the new PC? I just upgraded to an i7 system on Friday night (whole bunch came in at $2000, built it myself), best thing I've ever done PC wise :)

Tom :)

Tom - thanks mate. As for the new PC, it's amazing. I can finally play Trainz the way that it is intended to be played, with all the settings on maximum. I can also see scenes in my games that look like the screenies I see on here!

Loved your screenies also, is that the Wattle Creek to Wadalbavale route? The only thing missing from your train is a power van to power the airconditioning! I find that the Southern Aurora power van made by ad602000 will fill in the role in a pinch :).

How do you do it?

WOW! Just... Wow. I can't believe us Aussies are so talented:hehe:. I have just randomly browsed through a number of pages on this thread, and i must say a big thank you to all the authors of the excellent work that is presented, especially those creators of NSW locos and wagons. Without you, i would have given up on Trainz long ago.

I feel inspired. I shall be back, either later tonight or tomorrow afternoon with the efforts of that inspiration. Hopefully:D.

Adios,
Matt.

I'm Back

Hi guys and gals. I just spent a few hours in surveyor. These are the results. I know they are not perfect, but i haven't really spent time in surveyor doing much 'serious work,' and it shows.

Please, feel free to criticize. I can take it. I'm a real man:D.

myroute4.jpg

Don't laugh too hard.

myroute3.jpg

Please, i'm fragile!

myroute2.jpg

Really, those comments are uncalled for!

myroute1.jpg

Okay, i'll admit that, compared to some other shots in this thread, it looks pretty sub-par. But could you STOP LAUGHING.

Apologies if the above 'humor' failed to make any impression. I really am:D.

Matt.

Matt,

You've made a good start. What region are you trying to model? What state? It has a good generic feel to it, so you can really go with what feels good. I like your attention to detail with the suburban houses.

Something I try to do is find an area of real life and try to model it - not prototypically, but using that as a base for my own ideas. Have a look at existing layouts like Wattle Creek to Wadalbavale (built in), or download some from the DLS and compare them. Reading through this thread, I've borrowed landscaping techniques from axe1970 and texturing ideas from 0099. I'd also suggest downloading the gum trees by boobless_ed. As he himself has said, they are better than the built in gum trees, and even though he says they are not perfect, they really add an Australian flavour to any route.

Another thing I would suggest, is to look at photographs and diagrams of stations and yards to get an idea what is realistic. I take a lot of inspiration from my own travels chasing trains around NSW, but www.nswrail.net also has a massive collection of photos and diagrams. I also reference books for yard diagrams for ideas on how to build my yards.

Otherwise, keep plugging away. Your texturing especially is off to a great start, miles ahead of my first texturing! As I said, keep reading and keep sharing, and hopefully you will see improvement in yourself, and be pleased with your results.

Finally, one route I would suggest looking at is the latest route uploaded by patchy - I think it's called Cloncurry to Phosphate Hill (?). It's an awesome example of how to build a great looking layout. Worth a look if you can.

Raichase: Thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated.

With regards to what area i was trying to model, it's not too easy to say. This was done in about 3 hours, with no specific aim other than to see what i could come up with 'on the spot' so to speak. I suppose if pressed i'd have say outback NSW, but you can be the judge there.

I did have a good look at Wadalbavale, as well as Ozzie06 by colhad. The ideas for texturing were borrowed from those two routes. I'm glad that you like it, i for one think it needs a bit of work, especially around around the area where the second shot was taken. But, i'm learning and i can't expect perfection the first time around, heh?

Thank you for the suggestion of Boobless_ed's trees. I'm grabbing those now. I'll have to look at Patchy's route later. At 100+ MB, it'll take awhile to download. I am aware of NSWrail.net, but as yet haven't had a good look at it. Will do that tomorrow sometime. As for yard layouts, i have the line diagrams from the ARTC website, and constantly reference them for ideas. The yard in the screenie's was based on Singleton, as i had the diagram handy, and its not to complicated.

Anyway, thanks again. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement.

Matt.

Matt,

As 3830 once pointed out, holding the "[" or "]" buttons while texturing while spin the texture direction dial around very quickly, so if you use a slightly smaller brush size than you really need, you can get some really good results with only a few textures. Regarding the areas of texture you are unhappy with, grab the same texture and try this method over the area where the texture was originally. It's one of the best hints for Trainz I have ever seen, as texturing was always something I struggled with. Now I just struggle with the motivation!

After posting your reply, I jumped on to get some boards sceneried (a new word, perhaps?) and textured up. I've not finished throwing down items, but the lineside vegetation looks the part, so I just deleted the screenshots that showed things that didn't look completed.

4512 is hauling a set down stock train to Manning, the end of the line. With the load reduced to a handful of empty cattle and sheep wagons, and the line tending downhill, it's an easy run. I must admit, I was so taken with the CWS 44 Class that I have yet to give the 45 class a proper run, and I must say, it is equal to the 44 class in every way. Had to throw some ad602000 brand cattle wagons on the train, as well as Davido brand cattle and sheep wagons.

The thing I most like about this thread is the inventiveness of where some of the contributors drag their cameras to. Hope you didn't get any splinters from this shot Trent.:hehe:

Thinking he must get his tripod fixed and buy the fancy ladder from the shopping channel.

Glen, thanks for the comment mate. Based on when I ascended a tree to try to snag a shot of a departmental wagon at Cootamundra. I've also ascended a tree to get a shot of a 44 class near Chullora, although that was followed by a very rapid descent once my companion pointed out the enormous spider on the other side of said tree...

NORTHERN TASMANIA

This week marks my 8th anniverary with Trainz. I found it at the Brisbane Model Railroad Show in 2002 - and I have had the most amazing enjoyment since.

When I bought my first Trainz I knew what I was going to do - I was going to build a fictional route in northern Tasmania. (I had been dabbling with it in N scale - unsuccessfully for some years previously).

To make my route work Tasmania had to move.
It's now 23 kms off the Victorian coast.
After those magnificent people finished the Snowy River scheme in the early 60s they built a rail only tunnel under (the now narrower) Bass Strait, coming out just west of Ulverstone.

This rail connection with the mainland has opened up so many opportunities over the past 45 years (giving me the freedom to have all sorts of fun with all sorts of rail stock).

I have made very little attempt to accurately depict the actual route from west of Ulverstone to Port Sorrel (15kms east of Devonport). The population is much bigger and the rail connection makes a quite different community in Tasmania. (My Devonport is much more important that Launceston for example.)

I don't create assets - so i am very grateful for all the material I have access to - and salute all those who give us things to download.

My route is a work in progress - and will be forever I feel.
These shots are from TRS 06 (I am having trouble getting 10 to work at the moment - but I will migrate again).

These first shots are at the Bass Tunnel entrance to Tasmania showing an hourly car transport service from Southern Cross (Melbourne) to Devenport Central.

TUNNEL_1200_2A.jpg

TUNNEL_1200_2.jpg

Beside the welcome sign is a tourist facility with a platform for people to watch trains coming and going.
The Bass Tunnel also carries communication cables and the area near the tunnel is a busy communication hub. The signal box (below) looks after the rail traffic in the tunnel and keeps an eye on the hundreds of monitors installed in the tunnel.

Passing through the small holding yard to the east of the tunnel.

Hey Nick
That's a fairly interesting route you're making, I hope it's released as I wouldn't mind driving it

Georgetown to Tarin Rocks has been uploaded to the DLS. Should be available this evening.

I have created a new thread for the route & sessions here.

http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=56186

.... Just a couple to show off Natvanders and Davido new content. This will appear in a new session I am building. Alvailable tomorrow probably...

PS I know this is a screenshot forum, but this is the only forum I know Davido follows

Axe, good to hear that such a great looking route is available for the unworthy among us (myself included:hehe:.) You look like you have acheived some remarkable results, no doubt through many hours of practice and perserverance in surveyor. It is routes such as this, as well as the attendant screenie's, that are keeping my current levels of inspiration at a peak.

Many thanks,

Matt.

P.S Am i correct in thinking that this route is only available for 09/10? A great pity if it is, as i'll miss out:'(:'(.

Christmas in April/May??...

Over the last fortnight...

Patchy: Cloncurry-Phosphate Hill
PGibbons: Kywong Branch
ntesdorf: Goulburn-Crookwell/Taralga
axe: Georgetown-Tarin Rocks

Add to this Pete's and Davido's loco and rollingstock respectively.

Thanks very much fellas!! Some quality stuff from some talented route builders and content creators.

PS... apologies if I've left anyone out!!

On the DLS it's listed as 2009 SP2.

Whilst I have it perfectly in 2009, I tried it for 2006 for the hell of it, and I have 25 unknown items... with some 09/10 built-ins included as some of those. I guess you could always improvise and delete missing assets and sub some other items of your choosing. That way you don't miss out.
