This is just a place to put information about aussie railroads (real or trainz) so us Foreiners can learn more.
3 quick questions
1. Does the railroad run through the outback itself
2. Did QR run outside Queensland?
3. (Trainz related) Where can I get short but fun aussie railroad (I have Outback austrailia but would like somthing better.

Sincerly
Jimmy

I really should let my Aussie cobbers answer this but I just can't resist... :hehe:

Australia is divided up into states and each state became responsible for its own railway (hence the Godawful mix up over gauges).

Queensland Rail in Queensland, New South Wales Government Railways in New South Wales, Victoria Railways in Victoria, South Australian Railways in South Australia and West Australian Government Railways in West Australia. Just to add to the confusion there have been all sorts of almagamations and private enterprise stuff as well (like some of the ore railways).

The outback has a number of railways the most well known being The Ghan to Alice Springs formerly 3' 6" but now converted to 4' 81/2" and the line over the Nullarbor Plain that carries the Indian Pacific. Although one could argue that anywhere not in a city is the outback... :hehe:

I seem to remember a lovely little layout called Oz Trails or something like that. It was small and I spent a lot of time playing around with it but let me delve into my hard drive and I'll track down some kuids for ya.

A word of warning: the Aussies really get off on pulling peoples' legs so just be careful about what they tell you.:D

Aussie layouts

Hi jimmyp4,

There is a nice little 9 board layout by normp called summerland. It is not industry active but you can change it if you want to. It has continuous runs and point to point runs and can be developed into an interesting session.

Cheers,
Bill69:)

#1 Yes railways do run through the outback (not suprising as over 75% of Australia's landmass could be considered 'outback'). Australia has the longest straight stretch of track in the world, between Adelaide and Perth, and that is in the outback.

#2 QR now runs outside Queensland (under the name QR National). Railways in Australia until fairly recently were government owned, but now almost all are either run privately like most other countries, or are a government subsidiary (like QR).

#3 The Wadalbavale route is Australian based, but is coastal so there is no 'outback' scenery.

look for anyt layout by pgibbons and another called southlines 4. all these run in the "bush". The outback is anything west of a town called Bourke or the kickatinalong shire in victoria. As far as different gauges are concerned, this was drawn up under a federal government plan to cause havoc if the Japanese army invaded during world war two, they thought it would slow down any trains they brought with them. QR does currently venture outside queensland but all consists have to be fumigated at the fruitfly inspection stations at all state borders. Currently the two most exciting rail projects in australia are 1/ te new inland freight route from melbourne to queensland and the torres strait rail tunnel from cape york peninsula to port moresby, which was inspired by the english channel tunnel.
hope that helps:)

cheers

PS dont believe anything that kiwis tell you about aussies, they are just making mischief

I thought it was the drop bears that prevented QR from venturing outside Queensland?

Pete, the torres strait rail tunnel has been susopended due to budget issues. :D

Pete, I have to admit that is one of the most original explanations for Oz multigauging I have ever heard! Well done.

On this side of the ditch we decided to hinder and confuse the Japanese invaders by creating a monstrous government civil service...

... unfortunately someone forgot to tell them the war is long over.

Jimmy if you put "Australian" in the search window and search under "layouts" you'll find more Aussie routes than you can shake a Koala at...

you mean somebody claims there is another one? Granted they started at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, but you know what rate beaurocracy moves at, I mean they started the australia/ new zealand amalgamation process at the same time and thats nowhere near finished.( granted that it is NZ's anti nuclear stance slowing things down, even after Prof Einstein gave undertakings about it's safety)

I have it on good authority the the torres strait tunnel is a goer, mainly to counteract foreign sea captains who get to close to the shore grounding their ships of newcastle when they pickup coal loads from the railhead. they figure if there is going to be an enviromental disaster, better to have it of shore.
There is talk of an extension to singapore to make it economically more viable, but they havent completed negotiations yet with the Hutt river province and Indonesia yet.

The new freight route from Melbourne to Queensland is interesting, it is being built as a monorail. The real reason for the line is to replace the old rabbit proof fence and the mono rail will run along the top of the fence. As it will be an electric fence there is the added bonus of being able to run electric locos.

Doug.

geez doug i think you might of come up with the new platform for pauline hansen to run on.

Victoria is the ONLY place in the train world that calles smokestacks/chimneys funnels. (Other than Thomas The Tank Engine).

No wonder they think us Ausies try to pull the wool over every bodys eyes
The reason it took so long to build a line to Darwin from Adelaide The Yanks Offered to build a new line during WW2 To speed up transport of troops and Milatary Vehicles Which a lot of this was being manufactured in SA
All they asked for was mining rights one mile either side of the the track for the the full lenth except in cities and towns by the time the goverment made up their mind the War was over and they withdrew the offer .
When AN was formed in 1978 from SAR and Commonwealth Railways They built A new Standard Guage To Alice Springs with the hope to continue to Darwin No money was available to continue as AN was Nearly Bankrupt as It was Given a Mandate to be Profitable by 1994 It was split up into Diffrent Private Companys Who Seem to be Making a profit and with help from the goverment finaly built it to Darwin 60 years later

Ow, Ow!:'( My leg!

I may not believe some of the wilder stories, but they are a lot of fun.:hehe:
I always thought the gauge conflict was the result of a compromise program by a government standardization committee.
By the way, I picked up the engine this morning. Is the rest of the Gahn train on the DLS?

:cool:Claude

Hi Tokikyu
once apon a time their was a Scotsman Englishman Welshman & Irishman
who Though they had the perfict Guage for railways Narrow for cost Broad for comfort Standard for in between and so they brought it to Australia so each could build in a diffrent diffrent State as Australia is 25 times the size of the UK They thought they would never meet

Ow, Ow!:'( My leg!

Wouldn't worry about it now Claude. If you believed even half of this you'd be in a wheel chair by now with nothing from the waist down and have a whole SHEEP dangling in front of your eyes not just it's coat.:hehe:

Where did you get that information.? The Yanks did not offer to build the railway, they only made a recommendation. The Commonwealth Railways was renamed Australian National Raiways when Whitlam was still around it became AN later. I suggest you do some research like try the book The Never-Never Line by JY Harvey.
