Are you a rail photographer??

How many Pandrol clips can you see here?

And who else knows why this rail is like it is?

No prizes, just trying to get a bit of interest, there is a whole world of railways away from your computers!:p

One the second photo, it looks really oily (or deliberately greased), so on the basis it's probably a siding, I might speculate that it could be to do with the positioning of vehicles to prevent different lines fouling each other when stock is moved?

BidMod (who is completely guessing, and hasn't ever seen anything similar except during roadworks).

Yes Bidmod, it IS a siding and it IS greasy. Both are relevant, the zig zags are actually put on (weld?) for a specific reason. The first time I ever saw this was about 30 years ago at Sheffield Midland Station, this example is at Doncaster Station.

Also at Doncaster Station are a couple of these, which I think contain some sort of top-up fluid for locos or power cars. I wonder if they will be repainted when the GNER franchise finishes soon!

Hey John, you've found my missing "snap box" from 1981, I often wondered where it ended up....:hehe:

P.S. The GNER Logo stands for "Gone Noshing - Ex Railwayman"...

Many thanks for your replies, as I understand it the wiggly weld on the top surface is to improve the electrical contact with the wheels to ensure that the track circuiting detects the presence of rolling stock on little used tracks.

I also think that class 03s on station pilot duties sometimes had a semi permanently coupled match truck, in order to operate track circuits correctly.

Am I correct in thinking that certain modern railcars have special electronics to perform a similar function?

John

ps, Steve if Mrs and Miss C can persuade me to take them to Donny shopping again, I will scrape a bit of the paint off and see if it's BR blue with yellow ends underneath, maybe even Delly Headlights!

Some typical Country NSW scene's....

What once was a busy double platform station, only one platform now exists and the semaphore the point lever controlled is long gone...
To the far left is the old goods dock platform.

Sitting on the brick wall on the side of the old goods platform looking down to the diverging of the two mainlines into one.
These two lines start on the Sydney side of Orange and continue all the way to Springhill, this used to facilitate the high speed passing of trains.
The remains of an old crane sits to the right, there once was a shed on the small piece of track after the crane.

Highland nice station and some steam..

Oh those skies...

Got a chance for a break to the Highlands in Kingussie, lovely station and not far from the Strathspey Steam Railway, traveled to Brechin [Caledonian Railway] later to see the relatives but it was too dark..

Must return to revisit the child hood of Kerr's Miniature Railway at Arbroath.

Well heres one I took several months ago...

By remarkable coincidence it is, me and a friend were driving down to a place further up where a heritage railway line we work at has its "headquarters", saw this right when I got out of the car. In fact I got some good video of it if anybody wants some.

Here are a pair of photos from my trip to Ravenglass a few weeks ago. I don't think I've posted them before, but shout if you've seen them already

Long out of use, this restored signal box is built into the top of the cutting just to the south of the Station. It doesn't really look like it is from the first photo, because it was taken from the bridge, but in the second photo you can see how far away the tracks are.

BidMod.

Not exactly sure what we are allowed to post here, but back in the days when I WAS a rail photographer, here is Deltic 55008 The Green Howards waiting to leave Kings Cross on an overnight train in 1979.Taken with a Praktica LTL3 on a Velbon VGB3 tripod.....:p

Perefectly acceptable - Green Howards was the last Deltic I needed to 'cop' for the class.

grms i suggest you refrain from telling me what i should and shouldn't do...I work for QR and know all of our lines well and there is know way that the photo was taken from outside QR property i was just merely going to suggest if anyone wants to get photos from inside the fenceline that they contact Human Resources for permission better to be safe then sorry...we do have rules in relation to being trackside and its for everyones safety but by no means does QR discourage photos being taken and remember guys no flashes....lol....and i do admire the photo its a very gr8 photo but just concerned for his safety if he was trackside....so b4 you jump down someones throat i suggest you find out why they are asking that question first it just maybe that they work for the organisation involved...tc all hagd.....Jason

Ex Railwayman thanx for your kind comments! I took about 300 or more Deltic photos and several thousand photos of other classes and station.I"ll post a tasty photo tomorrow...;)
