Any Trainzers living in Thailand?

Just wondering what the Trainz experience is like living (as in residing) in Thailand, especially in south Thailand.

Is it easy to buy new releases of Trainz from there? What are the internet companies and connections like in terms of cost, reliability, download speeds and ease of getting service put on? Is it easy to get computer hardware suitable for running Trainz?

I'm thinking of spending a long time there at some point in the future, but I'd like to continue creating 3D assets for Trainz if I can.

Deane: I count twelve pages of Trainzers who reside in Thailand. You can see them with an Advanced Search and enter Thailand for 'location'. You could try a few PM's.

Yep. Keep in mind, though, that they may have limited English. I do note that Google Translate will go from English to Thai (and back). I actually lived there for 14 months in 1970/71. Way up in Udorn Thani near the Laotion border. Extremely friendly place.

Of the 356 Thailand-based members, only 4 have ever posted in the forums, so I'll just send a PM to them.

The level of English in Thailand has increased remarkedly in the last 10 years, but other than forum activity I have no way of targetting those who might actually understand my letter. I'll see what happens.

Why don't you PM; joosten - pinkiepienter He lives in Thailand with his Thai wife. (I'm sure he won't mind)...
Having lived in Thailand a number of years ago, I can assure you that you can buy the latest computer hardware/components in Thailand. In general, they are around the same price you would pay in the West...
Software is a totally different kettle of fish. A lot of very cheap, copied software. (don't want to use the big "P" word). If you are going to buy any Trainz software while in Thailand, buy direct from NV3/Auran.
ISP charges have probably changed dramatically since I last live there, so I can't bring you up to speed on that. (they seemed reasonable at the time)...
Cheers, Mac...

You'll start picking up spoken Thai in 12 - 24 months of living there, but reading/writing in Thai is a hard language to master. (There are 44 consonants in the Thai alphabet).

Your post translated.

Deane.

better late than never

Yeah, he was one of the people I PM'd.

No replies as yet, they are probably all too busy drinking Singha and cleaning up afterwards.:mop:

Hi dino,

sorry for missing your thread. Just by accident I stumbled on this one.
Yes we live here in the NE (near Mekong river Laos) and on Koh Chang(near Cambodian border)now for 7 years.
Would not try the south near Malaysia as this is terrorist country with a very high risk of getting in the wrong place at the wrong time.
internet here is probably better than many places on earth. I use Cat Telecom wireless high speed modem 800 bath/month(25 usd) as we live remote.
Living in Thailand is still unique and even more than before when you see the wetsern society systems fall apart with uncontrolable and corrupt cures from corrupt political systems. Yes thailand is as many many other coutnries corrupt to the bone but it covers at the same time what you call tax. As a foreigner you not pay tax here like in AU, EU,US you name and up every year.
If you can accept the political and south eastern culture with all its pro's and con's well there is no more relax and quiet place to stay in a very stabile climate weather wise.
To end with yes i drink one singha every day and that's it not like many other sort of falangs who enjoy coma drinking like youngsters in the west.
Hope this short intro helps and need a place to stay we have rooms with splendid views of the real thailand.
By the way I am not a party animal and prefer quiet relax stay and go sometime to the crowd when feel for it.
Dinorius I enjoyed very much your beautiful objects you share with us trainzers. Very nice and thanks for that.

Greetings from Thailand

Hi Dino,

As by nickname says I also live in the NE of Thailand known as Isaan. The lifestyle in this part of Thailand could be compared to Appalachia in the US. This tends to be the poorest part of Thailand but I find it very livable. I've been here 3 years and teach English conversation at the local high school.

Joosten is right, avoid the deep south as can be very unstable. I myself hate Bangkok but to be fair I have never lived in a large city. I lived on the east coast of Florida for years so I've had my fill of the ocean and beaches.

April is both the hottest time of the year and the Thai New Year known as Songkran. This is at least 3 days of the worlds biggest water fight and it is a love hate thing for falangs (foreigners) living here. I love it but the older I get I find it hard to keep up the energy for 3 days! As I write this the temperature is around the lower 60's F and I'm freezing! So yes it does get cold here once your acclimatized to the area.

As far as the internet avoid TOT at all costs. I have and I hate it and as soon as my contracts up I going with CAT telecom too. I got my Trainz via digital download. This is the land of pirated software and it can be difficult to find ANY legitimate software here.

All and all if your very flexible on your outlook on life you'll find Thailand a wonderful place to call home. If your a type "A" personalty and like everything neat and orderly you'll hate it here;). Also there is a growing falang community popping up all over the country. You'll find the local expats are quite a unique group of people :hehe:

Feel free to drop me a PM or post and I'll respond.

Say Bill - how do you set location in advanced search? I can't find it anywhere.

Thanks,

Ben

I still not get used after so many years to people not sign with their first name to makes things just look more personal and friendly.
Don't get me wrong for whatwever you insist I show up my name as is and have no objections.
By the way you not live to for from us guess 1 to 1.5 h drive via Roy-et.
Hop in when you feel the need and I'll show you my super trainz command centre and routes I am working on for the last 7 years:hehe::hehe:;)

Not to many falangs(less than a hand full) in this neighbourhood as I live far outside the regular community and have full privacy and splendid view of the mountains and valley Khao Wong is part of.

Have a great day and remember soon you will say darn its hot again how nice the cold and chilly nights with this year down to 10C at night last week.

warmest regards

Roy and Ning;)

Thank you for the invitation Roy and if you find yourself in Maha Sarakham look me up. I would love to see the layout one day so I'll PM you when we will be heading into the Roi-Et area.

I figure the wife and I will head back to Udon Thani where we have a small farm during Songkran and the school break. Again if you find yourself in Udon during this time I'll give you a tour of the town.

Trainz has been a god sent as you know having a model railroad here in not very practical or affordable. I have been trying to make the beginnings of my fictional railroad The Appalachian & Levi Line based in SE Kentucky. Even my students at work enjoy watching me build and run the trains on the laptop. It's turning out to be a good teaching tool too.

Trainz is the best ever for model railroad so far

thanks for the kind reply and we will pm you when getting to MS or Udon thani.
thanks and swadi to Ae from both of us
