AnnouncingTrainz™ Simulator 2009 & Trainz™ Simulator X

Tony --

Count me in, provided CMP is ditched.

The original method of easily identifiable folders plus an updated TrainzObjectz is far better for the many of us who like to tinker with assets and dependencies.

I use specular highlights on all my models, and i've certainly used bump mapping before as well.

Tony regarding the new new bump maps, normal maps, specular highlights that you mentioned, are these all controlled via textures like in many other computer games including one of your current competitors?

Also will their be any info regarding how to set these up before the sim is released?

I think it would aid content creators so they can possibly start implementing them at least at the texturing stage before the new version is released. I understand of course that through the development process, methods of creation can change due to coding updates etc. I'm assuming that this is something that you would want to get nailed down early on in the new versions development cycle.

Got a link ??

I've yet to see a proper implementation of normal mapping in Trainz ( excluding the built-in PB )

Bump and Normal = same thing to a vid card

well i will say it does sound alot more promising than TC, however....
will it have a new (or atleast updated) graphics and lighting engine?
Will their be pixel shaders and dynamic shadows as steve said?
Will their be actual directional lighting? (As it is now you can stand on either side of the loco and the lighting will pretty much be the exact same :o )
Will there be a new sound engine? Ive seen the steam sound update, looks pretty impressive however for us diesel fans will we still have to bear half the notches being silent and the horn fading in and out? I am guessing that those issues atleast will be solved, however the bigger issue is doppler effects? MSTS has it, KRS has it and MSTS II will have it, a vital part of a train sim sound engine that is missing from TRS.
I think someone earlier mentioned draw distances, will we get some decent draw distances finally? the 1 mile is pretty pathetic compared to the 4 mile in KRS and if MSTS II is like FSX the draw distances will be too the horizon.
sounds like a good effort but i am not convinced it will be able to compete with MSTS II, good luck anyways. :)

Impress us with results.

Don't dazzle us with your footwork. I have been around since CE and have developed a sound measure of sceptisism. Hence I won't be jumping around with a silly grin until I see something SOLID.

However - I am happy to see that the saga continues, but bringing back one gifted programmer isn't enough, you need a network of people with in depth understanding of what railroading is. Good to know that Uncle Rob and Bloodnok are present still, but you need more than these two talents if you want to avoid bloopers. They can easily get snowed under in a project of such scale, which is why I see the trainzdev as a step in the right direction. Maybe even the old community feeling will re-appear?

For fun sake let us check the backlog:
  • better research when creating non US/UK/AU material
  • prototypical signalling and switching on stations as well?
  • a proper block system and an AI that functions within such a framework
  • the old but usefull spline format (where the ends aren't squashed)
  • the ability to use decimal comma (you will be surprised how many who do that over here)
  • a scripting language that does not change with each patch
  • and more....
Now; it isn't all sour grapes. For instance the new finer grid makes me very happy. Builders of mountain railroads are going to love that. And since I am a polyholic the features of the new jet-engine sounds very promising. If you manage to make all the mentioned features work within an average performance envelope, you are going to seriously worry the competition.

Somewhere, in a city square flights of doves have just beat their wings into the air, the clouds have parted and the sun is beaming down upon the steel rails. Hallelujah!

Welcome news, and finally something to look forward to again. Any service I can be I hereby volunteer!

This is great news!!!! Congratulations to all at Auran for this accomplishment.

The most important part of the announcement for me is the acknowledgment that virtual railroading is a hobby. This sets VR apart from most computer games, which basically come and go. Virtual railroading requires a different mindset on the part of publishers and developers, one that requires a long perspective and all that that entails. This announcement is a most encouraging development for me. Way to go!!!!!

I am very happy that Auran will develop the next version of Trainz. When Auran ran into financial problems, laid off some staff members, and closed the part of the company that developed the "Fury" game late last year, I was very worried about the future of Trainz. I tried out Kuju Rail Simulator but while the program itself was good, I had problems creating content for KRS and I gave up after finding out that the door animations didn't work properly in KRS.

This tiny sentence captures my views, and probably those of thousands of TRS2004 holdouts, exactly. It's the entire reason I have been uninterested in any versions after TRS2004.

If you're going to persist with a CMP-type manager (and I suspect you will) have a good look at the capabilities of Trainzobjectz first and make sure the new CMP can at least do all those things. And bring back the region/type filing system (or at least give us that option).

Please.

I want to become an Auran customer again. :p

This is some great news. The improvements to the route editor sound very promising. But I have one question at this time Tony. Will the built in US locos be updated to some more currant quality standards? (like the Sd40-2 and GP38-2) Once we get some idea of what changes might be needed for the new content I'd be willing to offer up one or more of my currant locos I'm finishing up.

Trainz is back on track!

With TS2009, we will be improving the existing tools and adding new tools to allow different types of creative talent to come to the fore. Many Trainz users are more “train fans” than computer users, and so a big emphasis will be to ensure they can more easily find and harness the power that already exists in Trainz. This will be achieved through a cleaner, more user-friendly interface and a new browser-based in-game help system.

All I can say, is using a journalism major, to create help files, is all I can think of to ward off complete user meltdowns, rage, hate, abandonment, etc.

We have Search, Help, the Forum Community, and 3rd party websites, of which that I have only attempted HelpDesk about 2 times, since I joined in '04

Thanks to the Rail Sim UK team for their enormous efforts in making this new edition possible and thanks to all of you for supporting the ongoing development of Trainz.

"The" Rail Sim? Curious, can you elaborate?

By purchasing Trainz Classics 3 you will not only be taking advantage of many of the latest improvements, but also ensuring more time and effort can be re-invested into future editions.

Purchasing TC3...I had not planned that, but I'll definitely consider...

And by the way, I only had eight months PC experience, on Windows XP, when I started using the UTC 405 demo...and eventually TRS2004. I now run '04, and '06, on Windows Vista Prem...

Nothing is impossible, persistence and determination, are omnipotent!

Great news. This rekindles my interest in Trainz...as long as CMP is fixed or done away with.

Sheesh, that'll teach me to go to work...
While it all sounds good so far, it doesn't cost anything to write a press release. However, I'm willing to put it down as a good beginning. Now let's see how the follow through turns out.

Things I'd like to see (in no particular order): 1) CMP fixed. Great idea, lousy execution (at least as far as TRS2006 SP1). Hangs on me as often as it doesn't. Hopefully this has either already been addressed, or will be. 2) CMP and the DLS use the same set of rules. If content shows up as being fine in CMP, I should be able to drag it to the upload window, and that should be the END of my interaction with getting something uploaded. IF the content needs something else, have CMP check for that BEFORE I attempt to upload and wait a week to find out that some stupid icon isn't there. This is one of the major reasons for new users abandoning the DLS in favor of private websites, which in turn promotes pirated versions of TRS. 3) Allow CMP to cache DLS images and descriptions. That way, I can scan through the online content at my leisure, at home, without waiting forever to see what each item looks like. Then once I've selected what I want, connect to the DLS, get, and install it. Provide an option to log on and download images and descriptions in the background (so I can do it while I'm sleeping). 4) Get working NOW on some updated export modules. I'm tired of CDilla being on my computer just so I can run 3DSMax 5.1, or updating my system and having to fight with Autodesk to reinstall a program they've given up on supporting 4 versions ago. While Gmax still works, its less than optimal, and its "replacement" has proven to be nothing more than a rumor. Get support for some other stuff out there. 5) Get content creation info out in a timely manner. If you want new features supported and used in 3rd party items, which will drive sales of new versions of Trainz, we've got to know how to include them. 6) Fix the darned alpha Z buffer bug already! Every other program seems to know which transparent object to layer on top of which other one, except Trainz!

Heck, there's probably more that I can't think of at the moment, but if you could address those, or a subset of them, I'll be happy. I'd rather the game work correctly than see more bells and whistles with broken parts.

Most of the TRS2004 resistance has spoken.....

I suggest make CMP function Outside of the sim like TRS2004. If the content management program ran outside of the sim then many hardware resources could be freed up. Oh, and make the file structure easy to understand. Having a folder with each asset's name would vastly simplify management of assets.

RE Quote ·Download 1,000’s of routes, locos and more from the Trainz Download Station

Does this mean the DLS will be cleaned up so when you Download a Layout all Dependencies will be there and not "Faulty content" and they are NOT scattered to the corners of the world ? ? ? ? Same with any Rolling stock ? ? ?

Will there be Duel core and SLI surport added ? ?
:D

Just to repeat what I said in the other thread:

Sounds great, but anyone that's been around here long enough will remember Greg Lane's future of Trainz post, and how great that sounded.

I wish Auran luck with it, and hope it does happen, but I refuse to get excited by this news of things to come.
Been there, done that.

Trainz down the line.

Of course right now, Trainz Classics 3 is ready to hit the online store shelves and there is no doubt that the new features included are a real treat for train fans. There is a great selection of ready to drive sessions across some lovely English countryside and steam fans will be especially challenged to ensure they keep their boiler performing well.

Tony:

I would love to believe that you are serious about revitalizing Trainz and returning it to the stature it once had. There are many of us who have stood by Trainz through thick and thin. Most of the comments we have made in the last 6 months have gone on deaf ears. You are now promoting the latest edition of Trainz Classics, TC3. And you would of course want all your loyal customers to purchase same. Yet you cannot take the time to acknowledge a commitment that was made to the people who took their time to enter a Layout building contest for Trainz Classics.

You need to clean the slate and state that you withdraw that competition or actually determine the winners and award the prizes you promised. Don't just ignore us.

If you want to have loyalty, you must follow through with your commitments. Else, why should we believe anything you say.

I want to continue top be a Trainz Fanatic.

Please give me a reason to do that.

Dave
