aircraft

I thought that this was a trainz sight not an aircraft sight, so why are there so many aircraft in the download station if i wanted to fly a plane i would use my flight sim.

It adds much diversity to the simulator, as it is a simulation of the real world, where planes, trains & automobiles, along with people, interact.

People ... I thought this was a train simulator ... If I wanted to see people ... I would break out my Sim's game.:hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

No one has said you have to use the aircraft, that's up to you.
Some creators have made trams to put in their layouts, the same rule applies.

It's called "freedom of choice", if it's there, you can use it if you choose, but if it wasn't there, you would most likely be on these boards moaning about the lack of choice. :n:

It would be very handy, Auran, if aircraft items had their own little icon in the DLS.
These days when goimg for a browse amongst what might be new, and being limited to 1000 items, one finds 150 or so aircraft instead of locos - it is a little frustrating and lilmiting.
How about it Auran??

A good point but there are static aircraft (purely scenery items) and dynamic aircraft (run like locomotives on tracks) just as there are dynamic rolling stock and static rolling stock (sit on tracks like signals but act as pure scenery). Likewise with building objects - both static and dynamic (e.g. ships and I seem to remember a signal box that was also a locomotive so it could have an interior view). I am sure that there are other combinations - you could also make a case for other icons for industry and passenger active assets.

That would make a lot of different icons that would be needed.

 Speaking of Aircraft... what do I need to do to get them appear on my layout, let alone fly them... I have placed the tarmac strip, put that invisible line you need to place there too (that's the invisible yellow line for aircraft, but nothing happens, no fokker friendship or Quantas etc... I would be very inclined to think that the sight of an aircraft or two flying around above what is happening on the railway lines does add a whole new dimension, though I ido agree with other members here about there being too many all mixed in with the rest of the rail stock in the DLS...

but Help! whaddyado?

I had a brief phase of playing with aircraft in trainz. In fact my first route incorporated an airport railway station with a fully operational airport.

I think the biggest disappointment was the lack of any airborne scenery. I barnstormed buildings and flew my Spitfire under bridges, so I was able to utilise ground based assets, but only at low altitude.

It would be great if you could fly through the clouds, but all of the Trainz cloudy skies are forever out of reach, and you can’t place cloud assets and fly through them.

However, you can fly through the vapour trails of other aircraft which gives a great sense of movement at high altitude. Here’s a Boeing 727 going through a group of three (1 dirty and 2 “clean”!). They were made as smoke asset splines, but I’ve discovered that they make really good vapour trails as well!

At the end of the day though, flight simulators are much more up to the job if you want to fly.

Out of interest, do any Flight Simulators have operational trains and can they be driven?

Cheers
Casper

Bad boy Casper !! As you can see my top pilots are on their way to see you...

Bushymo - operational planes are just locos so place invisible track, add drivers and fly!

(Writ small so's no one will notice!!)

The secret is to lay invisible railroad track, you can even add invisible signals, switches and speed signs. The speed signs are very useful for take-off and landing runs, and taxiing of course.

The aircraft (which must be of type Locomotive, not of type building or scenery) have to be placed on the track just like you would a steam or diesel loco. They will not move in Driver until you assign them a driver and set of "Navigate to ..." commands (for which you will also need to place trackmarks along their route) or jump into the cockpit and take direct control yourself.

I started experimenting with a simple Tiger Moth locomotive and used a flat field as an airfield - I even added a few "hops" (undulations in the track) during the take-off run for added effect.

There is a small Aircraft only Layout on the DLS called Lukla Airport.
On it you can see how planes can fly on Invisable track, over Mountain terrain and land on small Airstrips.

NormP.

Of course it is my own.but I can push my own barrow.

FOKKERS ARE OBJECTS, BUT DO NOT APPEAR

A-ha! I have done a trial and the Fokkers are 'Objects' not 'Locomotives' but even when you go to click on them to place them in Surveyor, they do not appear, but in the Locomotives there is 'An Airbus, and that does appear... so it looks like I will need to download any Fokkers or any other aircraft that I should desire... No wonder the Fokkers in Surveyor won't fly... they don't even appear, yet there seems to be no reason why they shouldn't appear, they're not in red like a normal faulty asset... One of the small planes in 'Objects' in surveyor does appear, like a little 'Cesana type thing' that comes up...
