simulating dark territory

From what I've read, the Newfoundland Railway was not signalled. The station master at each station would give the engineer a train-order to proceed to the next station. With often only one train per day, it would have been difficult to run into another train so this was not an issue.
So what is the best way to simulate this in Trainz? No signals at all, will the AI still function? Invisible signals to "fake" it in a way

The AI will still function and will act as though they are running on yellows. You may need invisible signals if there are any passing loops along with direction markers, otherwise there will be cornfield meets throughout.

ElStoko created a staff system that can simulate what I think is a train order type system.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) both in real life and on our route uses no signalling. What we had to do, like John says, was to make trains have a little more speed by putting invisible speed boards where the trains could go faster. Due to steep grades and the like, the trains run mostly at a near-walking pace anyway. If you start a train using AI, it will function from one end of the route to the other with no intervention--speeding up where it can, and slowing down where it needs to.
