ABANDON SHIP!( or how to sink one of Vulcan's ore carriers)

Recently, while building a large harbor (part of an even larger route, but i won't reveal what route till later) I was laying track for vulcan's ore ships when i missed one spline point while knocking their height up to 0.00 meters. As i steamed away from the hullet loader, the ship suddenly pitched down and slipped beneath the waves.

That got me wondering: I wonder if we could make a track arrangement to actually sink a ship like one of vulcan's. a half hour of tinkering later, this resulted:

It's a calm day at Broadton Harbor, as a large, aging whaleback ore carrier eases away from the hullet dock and down into the Whaling Channel (named for the harpoon ships that used to hunt here) for another run to Iron Island. Things are showing green on the old ship, which, despite her age, is still running like a champion racehorse.

suddenly, there is an almighty crack!! at the bow and the ship shudders from stem to stern. the crew doesn't know it yet, but an ancient weld has snapped the length of the underwater hull. the bow begins to dip into the sea, the forward momentum of the ship driving more and more water inside her.

soon, the forecastle is underwater.

the sea is unrelenting, pouring in faster than the pumps can manage. soon, the vessel rears up by the stern, and the engines tear free from their mounts. steam shoots out of the transom. she's almost gone.

the crew mans the boats, and watch on in horror as their beloved ore carrier slides into the abyss.

just an expiriment i did tonight. I thought, since it worked so well, I'd share it with you guys. Tell me what you think, It's defintely an interesting concept (at least i think). maybe this is taking sea-borne trainzing too far? I don't know, but it sure was fun watching that ship go down! Thankfully, due to this being a simulator, no one was hurt!
 
Next up, arraial's liberty ship if I can find it.

(PS, if anyone's interest in the setup, let me know and i'll show it on here. It's deceptively simple, but can be a pain to set up by trail and error)
 
looks like she lost her screw somewhere between her sink point and the dock....a nice big single screw ...hopefully made of phosporbronze$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. :udrool:

okay, did some more expirimenting, and looks like the bigger ships like the Global Challenger (Oil Tanker) and the Edmund Fitzgerald don't like my track arrangement. looks like i have to sink them in deeper water.

(On second thought, sinking the Big Fitz may be a bit cruel, considering what happened to her in 1975).
 
Years ago when I used UTC on that low-budget eMachines desktop that we had back then, I made a simple "sea" route to run austin316hockey's (?) big HMS Mauretania on, and somewhat even other ships as well. The route was mostly water, with (rather bare and basic; at least one of them had a road going across) land endpoints to dock at. A few/several minutes would go by for each trip, if I remember correctly. I ended up adding an "easter egg" to the route, where somehwere along the route, you would find a junction lever on the water surface. Change that junction, and the ship would veer off course and sink. Once the ship was under (if I remember correctly), it would reach the end of the invisible track, causing the ship to fall to the bottom of the (deep?) crater that I made for that. :p Since that desktop apparently got damaged from a storm or whatever, and thus probably would not start, I probably will not be able to recover that route. :'(

The disadvantage of using TRS2004 for stuff like this compared to UTC is that when a train (or ship) would derail in UTC, the camera would still stay stuck to that train in External view, allowing you to easily follow it at it fell down to the bottom of the crater. :cool: In TRS2004, however, the camera immediately switches to the Free-Roaming view when the train derails, and you can not switch it back to External View I believe, thus making it harder to follow the falling/sinking ship. :'(

I didn't know Kelsey Grammer did such free lance work. Perhaps a grammar checker would work better...:hehe:
