A Historic - Yet Little Known - Event in American Railroad Preservation History

33 Year Old Railfan
In 2017, an important milestone occurred in the restoration of a one-of-a-kind locomotive. The Niles Canyon Railway, owner of Southern Pacific 9010, the only surviving (at least) Southern Pacific German-made Diesel-Hydraulic #9010, has done a cosmetic restoration of this one-of-a-kind locomotive. However, they have since taken it to the next level by restoring this locomotive to full, operating condition. And in 2017, one of 9010's two Maybach MD870 engines were started for the first time in almost 50 years. And in October of last year (2017), it moved under its own power for the first time.
If you want to donate to the restoration, here's the link 9010's 'profile' on the Niles Canyon Railway's website: http://www.ncry.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=541047&module_id=137688&actr=4

Looks a powerful beast :)

The Krauss-Maffei ML 4000 C'C', was built between 1961-1969. The ML 4000 C'C' produced 3,540 horsepower. Each of the two Maybach V-16 MD870 engines the ML 4000 C'C' had produced 1,770 horsepower. The only production model British diesel locomotive produced at the same time as the ML 4000 C'C' was the Class 55 Deltic, which produced 3,300 horsepower total, split between the two Napier Deltic D18-25 engines, each produced 1,650 horsepower. However, the experimental HS4000 'Kestrel' is the only British diesel locomotive manufactured during the same timeframe as the ML 4000 C'C' that beats it with 4,000 horsepower. Also, the year Southern Pacific 9010 was built, 1964, the only British locomotive built was the Class 14, which produced only 650 horsepower. 9010 produced 5.45 times the power of the Class 14.
