A different perspective…..

While I know in advance that some in the Trainz Community will label me as a…. fan boy…etc. please allow me the opportunity to offer my opinion on the current situation about Life Cycle Support of older Trainz versions.

To all the self appointed MBA’s in Business Management, Majoring in N3V and Auran Business Practices, please know in advance that I value your opinion, and I ask that your value mine. FYI…. I do have an MBA in Accounting and Finance and have retired after 29 years of employment with a global corporation.

To start, I offer a Thank You, to all the Content Creators who have contributed their time and creative abilities to facilitate the growth and enjoyment of this great game.

It is good to see that many 3rd party sites have offered their services to maintain the legacy items that many of us enjoy. That proves to me that Trainz is a Community of loyal and devoted people who want to continue offer these older creations for current and future Trainzers.

I also understand the Content Creators devotion to the Trainz Versions that have enabled them to make the wonderful items that we all enjoy.

But, I also applaud N3V for making the necessary business decisions that they need to continue the growth and continued prosperity of their, and our, Trainz game.

Some posts on the forums say that the Life Cycle policy is just a method to ….FORCE…. people to upgrade to newer versions. This may just be simplistic view of life. No one is forced to upgrade, if your happy with what you have, stay with it.

Another point I would like to offer is…. We have seen a large number of complaints about the Help Desk. By reducing the number of supported Trainz versions, the Help Desk should be able to provide better and faster response times to tickets submitted.

So, time moves things along and we all will adjust to the future.

Thank you all for your time.

That is the most sense I've seen, written in one post on this subject.

Well said aardvark1, I totally agree.

Common sense at last with realism

Thank you for in my view a post on this subject worth replying to. The world stands still for no one whether it's liked or not.

Others have said it already, but I think you've made all excellent points and I'm glad to see there are some here who don't feel that the sky is falling. :)

As for being labelled a fan boy, you won't hear that from me. I have to admit I find the negative attitudes and opinions that many have on this forum towards Auran hard to understand. I think we have it pretty good here! Auran has provided far more support for these products than Microsoft - a much larger company - ever did for MSTS. Railworks seems to be fairly well supported, but Trainz still has far more content available from third party sites alone than RW does. I'm not trying to knock those other sims. Just saying that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

We don't need the DLS in order to enjoy Trainz. We don't really need Auran at all for that matter. Having Auran so involved in the product is really just a bonus as far as I'm concerned. Having them continue to produce new versions is an even greater bonus since that doesn't always happen. Remember, MSTS2 has been announced and cancelled twice!

If Auran stopped producing Trainz right now, they'd likely be attacked for abandoning the community and caring only about money. Instead, they continue to produce and support new products and they are attacked for caring only about money and "forcing" us to upgrade to new versions! Funny how that works, isn't it?

Anyway, that's just my fanboy opinion.

Good to see a positive and common sense post. Always get tired of reading all the negative posts. Been here since the very first version, have purcased most, and currently have TS 2010. Love it. Things move on and change, I am surprised that they have been able to keep as much compatibility with past versions.

I agree with all of the above, but if they are going to drop support for older versions, shouldn't they have been shelved before this announcement. They are still selling the older versions even though they have made this announcement!

So, while I agree to all the above, the current policy of selling a product they do not intend to support is just plain wrong, even if it is a reduced cost package deal.

Those who are just now buying the older versions are going to be a bit disappointed to find the lack of support they will get.

To sum it up, they should not be selling the versions they plan to "abandon" and should have shelved them well in advance of this announcement.

G'Day All, Yes that is the crux of it, they sold the products right up to the fall of the axe. What's more even if you buy a FCT you will not be able to use the in game DLS access, this is the part that sticks in peoples craw. I have an FCT and will continue it until the cut off. As for new versions, what is new about it, 2009 and 2010 were just 2006 enhanced a little with a few extra carrots added to the stew and reheated.

Is it really worthwhile to answer such patent nonsense? and yes I have all those versions.

Actually, I don't think that we are selling any of the products which are to be unsupported this year. We are giving them away free with the boxed copy of TS2010:EE while stocks last, but if you don't want the unsupported freebie, then you're welcome to chuck it in the bin.

Hmmm this thread has common sense, logic and reasoning as well as being polite, it's doomed :D :p :hehe:

Cheers David (who agrees with the thread)

So far - not so.

Is it really worthwhile to answer such patent nonsense? and yes I have all those versions.

I have several versions of Trainz. I have run it since Trainz first came out so I think I know whether or not improvements have been made.
There is a gap, no 2009. The reason was I paused until the usual hitches were sorted out with a patch. But before that happened 2010 was mooted.

Having bought and run 2010 and its CM version of the asset utility I have found it works better. Maybe it's just me, probably not. The ECML ran first time, no problems and no stutter.
This has not been the case with 2006, especially within CMP.
So this time (I am hoping) Auran have it right. I expect a patch at some point, complex programs, once released to the wide world and us 'end users', although I am unsure which end some people use them on, often come up with a glitch here and there. 2004 had them so it's nothing unusual and I welcome this attitude.
So far I like 2010. The CMthingummy went and got all the dependencies for a selection of both cdp's and content in Imported and some of it was definitely 2004, perfectly and without a fuss. This was a first for me and I admit it surprised me!

Speedtreez? Not sure about those, didn't like the look of them much, far too much depth in the green which made them look enreal.

My twopennyworth,

Angela

Bingo, there speaks the voice of reasoning :)
History is for the books, lets move on, as they say :)
