16:9 OR 4:3 FORMAT?

Just recieved my new computer and installed Trainz and was a little dissapointed to find it runs in 4:3 format. Is there something I should do to have it run in 16:9 or full screen. The computer is a 15 in. Dell xps with i-5 intel 480 and the video card is 1gb nividia 420. Any help would be appreciated.

Of course,you can.

Just change the screen resolution in Options --> Screen Resolution tab.

You can find this on the Trainz opening splash screen.

Obviously choose the resolution that fits yours in pixels on your comp screen. 4:3 or 16:9 is a too simple way to fit resolution. :hehe: Trainz speaks Pixel language all the time.

Just come back with more if you have further doubts.

Remember also that it is best to set your screen resolution to the "natural" resolution of the monitor. My monitor' resolution is also the same as 'widescreen' (1600 x 900 pixels) so I've set Trainz to run at that resolution. Works fabulous.

Just to complete your info. ;)

if your exact monitor resolution doesn't appear listed on the Options --> Display Settings tab...

...You can always set it manually on your trainzoptions.txt file located in the root folder of your TS2009/TS2010 installation by including these lines:

Code:
-width=XXXX
-height=XXXX

where XXXX are the exact number of pixels as your monitor resolution.

Well... that is very easy. but setting resolutions to more than the 4X3 means that you are distorting the aspect ration of the original basic setting. Remember the old times when you could see a resolution-aspect ration in televisions? There was a circle, and we had to make this circle as round as possible. Perhaps Trainz should have a test pattern chart so we can set the proper aspect ratio. What we do today, is "stretch" the image to cover the wider screens. I am guilty of this, but I recognize it is not right, because there is a horizontal distortion quite noticeable. Solution? Trainz should be made nowadays to cover wide screens (in native mode), and forget the "old" 4:3. Any comments?

I'm fairly certain that the changing to a widescreen resolution in Trainz has always correctly changed the shape of the view in Driver and Surveyor, rather than stretching a standard 4:3 view. However, I recall that Railyard and some of the splash screens and system menus were distorted. This has now been largely fixed in 2010- I can't remember but think it was one in of the service packs?

R3 is correct. 2010 allows the widescreen resolution to simply show more of the 'playing field'. Versions earlier than 2009 (I think) did have some distortion, but it was not really noticeable.

My 2010 is really great now that I can use the fly-outs and not cover the working area.

I run a wide screen monitor, res is 1360 x 768
I find this distorts Trainz in surveyor & driver modes too much, so I run Trainz @ 1280 x 768 (5:3) & find the
distortion is then hardly noticeable, but better than 1024 x 768 which has wide bands of desktop showing on both sides.
