LE&E class R-1 3701 tackles the 1.5% climb out of the Wanakah River valley with time freight CB-72 in August, 1936. A few miles east, the train will set out a few cars at Cattaraugus before heading for Albany. Although the R-1s primarily held down passenger assignments, with reductions in passenger service during the depression, they were increasingly assigned to hotshot freights, particularly on lines east of Pittsburgh.
