World Origin Altitude vs track altitude

Good day fellows,

I might have misunderstood the concept from day one, but I'm working on my first layout, and thought I'd do things right from the start. I went to Google Earth, found the elevation of what I wanted to be my "center of the universe", created a world origin, set the altitude to the same as what I found on Google Earth.

When I lay tracks, or roads at "ground level", altitude shows 0. Did I miss something? Am I doing something wrong? I was expecting the altitude to me the same as my world origin's altitude.

Thanks!

By default, the default altitude level for track and roads is 0.00 - this has always been the case.

The altitude of the world origin probably does not affect much.

Thanks Shane. So to your knowledge, can the default be changed? I'm trying to replicate track altitude as accurately as possible, and the "base" altitude should be 735 meters. I suppose I could force the track height at that altitude, and then raise the ground below it, but I'm hoping there's an easier/better way.

World Origin and terrain features

Set your World Origin with appropriate Lat/Long and Elevation (in meters). When you place the cursor on q land feature along route it should give you the appropriate elevation. You could check several points along your route to check the elevation.

The World Origin object is just an attribute to the route, a very useful attribute but still an attribute.

For proper elevation data in a route check MicroDEM/HOG, MapMaker or TransDEM.

Tampering with World Origin

Perhaps this should be considered in a list of things not to do.
I altered the United States region which by default centers you in Washington DC.

I was now able to set my world origin my way.

After doing this I noticed a problem using the terrain tools. The get height tool and terrain averaging tool showed conflicting heights.
There were other measurement glitches that made me wish I'd left well enough alone.
I have since restored the file, and am still looking to see if all went back to normal.
I am wondering if anyone has done this sucessfully?

I ran into this as well. Chose "get height", trackbed showed an altitude of 1600 ft.. Chose "use height", clicked on the trackbed and a 1600 ft. column rose out of the bed! (hell of a view, though!) I found if you're changing the terrain at all, you want the environment altitude set at 0. I'm guessing that surveyor wasn't educated regarding altitudes. Once everything has been changed to your liking, set the altitude to the desired for the region.

Oh, I see, so the land does show at the right altitude, the track (vertex height) shows at 0. I guess it's 0 meters, relative to the "base" ground. I can work with that. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but I guess it'll do.

I'll have to have a look at that. I think I had bought transdem a few years ago, I'll have to look for my emails.

Thanks all!
