Why do you play Trainz?

Hello,

Just looking into purchasing Trainz 2010, but I was wondering first why some of you use Trainz. Is there actually some sort of goal to the simulator like completing missions? Or is it just the fun or controlling trains and rolling through the scenery?

I'm seriously looking into purchasing Trainz, but I've read some so-called 'reviews' stating that running trains is actually quite boring after a while. You go from point A to point B and that's it.

I'm into Flight Simulator quite a bit so I'm hoping that Trainz would be the same sort of fun.

Many thanks for any and all replies.

I too am a big Flight Simulator fan but I just love Trainz. Before I enjoyed flight sims especially the Jane's military flight sims of the 90's I was a model railroader. Trainz offers the model railroad experience and more.

In Trainz not only can you create the route of your dreams but also get the perspective of driving the train or rail fanning. If you love trains then you'll really like Trainz.

There are several aspects of Trainz that keep my interest. First, my creative side likes to design and create routes and operating sessions. I have also learned to write gs code so I could create scripted assets. I also like operations, but not the usual.

I also like complicated prototype operations where I can run trains and deliver freight. Just running trains can be quite boring, but operating a complete division with multiple trains with every freight car having a destination is anything but boring. And now that multi-user is on its way, there is a whole new dimension to operations.

As far a completing a mission, with trains, how making sure that all 75 inbound freight cars get delivered to their proper destinations of over 50 industries. Sessions with a mission come in all sizes and complexity.

If you like building things and then operating them, you can't go wrong with Trainz.

Personally, what brought me into trainz was interactive industries. It was the ultimate model railroad. I could gather the loaded cars at the industries with my local engine, build the train in the yard with the switcher, take it over the road with the road engine(s), then break it down in the next yard and take the cars and unload them at their recieving points. It was what i dreamed of for my model railroad, where empty hoppers magically become "loaded" under the mine chute even though they're still empty.

Like many, i too used flight simulators and even MSTS, and i still use Microsoft Fligth Simulator. I love them both equally, but the fact that i can basically do it all on the railroad from the comfort of my computer screen is amazing. It's all the fun of a real railroad, without the holy hell raised when the train arrives late:hehe:

What is a flight simulator for except for traveling from point A to point B? I don't understand the difference, except that while traveling there is more scenery to look at at ground level than at some-thousand feet!

Well said as always, Ed. LOL.

What brought me to Trainz? The ability to build the railroad or model railroad of my dreams. There's no way one could build a 200 mile railroad and be able to operate it alone, not worry about maintenance, space and cost, and still be able to sit in the driver's seat too.

Trainz is very much like a regular model railroad because there are so many aspects to keep you busy. The actual Surveyor and route building aspects are like the actual layout building with the plaster and plywood. With Trainz there's no mess other than the tea, coffee and other goodies that get spilled on your keyboard as you forget what time it is and munch at the keyboard.

Also if you don't like something you built, rip it out and try again. No loss other than your time. There are no broken track parts, wasted plywood, and for me no allergic reaction to the gypsum plaster.

The script writing and that aspect of content development could be similar to the wiring and those that like to figure out complicated switch lists for running. In Trainz there are a number of experienced programmers who will spend their time writing and debugging awesome scripts. These are written in a C++ or Java-like language so you need some programming experience and lots of patience!

The content creators who make models, are like the scratch builders. When we use the content, we're like kit builders and bashers, particularly if we reskin models. This too can be an exciting and challenging aspect of the hobby, particularly when you can recreate a long lost steam locomotive from old plans and see it operate on your or someone else's route.

Then there are those that like to just run the trains. These are the people who go to the train shows and hobby events and run the trains for the fun of it. There are also a more dedicated, folks who will run to timetables and complex running orders. This can get really complicated and very time consuming.

And now the best thing of all with Trainz is you can be as complicated with it as you wish. If you want to count rivets and screw threads, you're welcome to it. If you want to put in every detailed grass blade and anthill, be my guest. There is no one here to stop you. You can even run as spartan as you want, and no one will complain. This is all your stuff, and it sits on your computer for your enjoyment. The only limitations will be your computer hardware and your imagination.

Remember this is a hobby to have fun with even with it's long learning curve. When it's no longer fun, you need to step away and do something else.

Re why play trainz

I seriously got involved in Trainz in July 2009 with TC Harlem Line/Modula City. I especially liked the urban light rail transit aspects of Modula City, so for about 3 days, personal hygiene, food, and sleep were secondary priorities.

I just got TS 2010 and have imported my TC route that I have a year and a half of time invested in. I spend 90%+ time in surveyor so I'm always adding to and improving my route. Unlike many Trainz users that spend most of their time in driver, I'm just the opposite. Also, you can always learn more by trial and error and this forum - not to mention the great user-provided content available on the DLS. Some games you master and then there's no new challenges - haven't played SimCity 4 since.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, it's winter time. I'm stuck in the house. It's either this or talk to the other half. At my age, you enjoy the peace and quiet.

It's fun to create anything you want. I'm a huge model railroading fan. The small route I have room for gets old after a while. It is the same route over and over. With Trainz, I have every route I was ever interested in at my finger tips without the major cost. I have about a dozen big routes I always admired in some form of completion and dozen more small ones I built. No tear down of the old to make room for the new. Get bored with this route, move to this one. All for about $40 and no mess.

Don't tell the other half what I said. She can be pretty mean or I would talk to her more.

Everybody here has made good points and for me I like the creation aspect more than driving trains themselves. I created a lot of scenery for past versions of MSFS, and I find it more fun than FS itself - and I'm a commercial pilot!

One point I should make though is that there are HUNDREDS of routes and sessions available for Trainz, so you have a lot to keep you occupied.

1. They wont let me do half the stuff I do in Trainz with a real train.
2. They wont let me do half the stuff I do in Trainz with a model train.
3. I cant yet drive a real train, thought I am hoping to get a job with a rail road. (Yes I have some resumes out with a few.)
4. They wont let me do the other half of the stuff I do in Trainz with a real train.

I play trains because I don`t have the space or money for the model railroad I want to build and also because CN and CP rail won`t let me play with theres. Oh, they`ll let me look just as long as I don`t touch.

I've been playing online MMOs for over 4 years, and simply got tired of killing beast after beast. It's always been more appealing to me to create rather than destroy, but my daughter roped me in on those games. Besides, if my routes are well designed, I do not die in Trainz when my narcolepsy suddenly puts me to sleep, which is a huge plus :D

Nothing fromn the UK - yet! (Now there is ...)

I agree with everything said - but for me, JCitron sums it up perfectly. After over 40 years of 'physical' railway modelling, limited by all the factors mentioned, Trainz was liberating.

Perhaps one day I'll have a go at scripting - I must have tried everything else by now.

Long periods of total boredom, interrupted by brief periods of high concentration ... and occasional sheer panic!

Just like real flying.

Creating flight plans, taxiing, takeoffs and landings were fun to do, and very satisfying when done well. Post flight analysis was a good way of improving skills. Once at altitude, apart from some of the bad weather and blind flying, it did get very boring.

Why I like Trainz ... endless creativity!

(UK as well, and no plans to return to Flight Simulator)

As others said before, for me trainz is much more than just running a train from A to B. In fact it's the continuous choice of things to do or can be done that is its attraction. One day you're in the driver seat and the other you feel the need to create that special item nobody build yet. The next day you get the urge to resurrect a monumental valley and on another you get the idea for that ultimate switching area. In short, even if you diverse a day and fly your favorite DC-3 from EHAM to EGLL it's still all there the next day for you to build on your fantasy. And all that without the need for a spare room in your house, or a storage area for a pile of modelling spare parts and tools.:hehe:

Greetings from cloudy Amsterdam,

Even with a small route you find you always tweaking it here and there to get it to you the way you want especially with AI

My main interest lies in creating layouts which run 100% AI trains. The challenge for me is to run as many AI trains as possible on my route!
