Whistle

Where do you see trains? In Arozona they just whistle once, in Germany they sometimes whistle (on ungaurded crossings mainly) and in Britain they give 1 long blast followed by 2 short ones?!?!?!? This planet can drive one nuts merely over trains whistling before crossings!:D

BR is normally two blasts on the horn for a warning. one low, one high or vice versa. If there are people on the lineside, it's the warning horn low/high followed by a another peep in any tone when the track crew have acknowledged your presence. if, on the other hand, there are people on the lineside who don't get out of the way, you hang on the horn and start braking hard.

as for length of time, it depends on the driver. but then again most drivers seem to think they're musically talented and have their own unique tone sequence on the horns.

Is there a rule for a whistle at stations to tell trains they can go?

To answer the original query, (before it was highjacked by discussions concerning crossings, etc., ) to make your own station master/guard whistle (or any other sound) try this:

1. You will require a mic (they are not expensive if you need to purchase one).

2. You will need a whistle of course. :D

3. You will also need to download "Play a Sound" file kuid:121843:90003:1 by "pitkin" if not already held.

4. Open the following: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Entertainment\Sound Recorder. A small window "Sound-Sound Recorder" should appear on screen.

5. Left click (LC) "Edit" and LC "Audio Properties". Ensure the following:
a. "Sound playback" is showing "C-Media Wave Device".
b. "Sound recording" is showing the mic that you have installed (for example: "AK5370"). (This is one that I use from Logitech).
c. "MIDI music playback" is showing "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth".

6. Check the volume settings of each of the above. My personal preference is to set them as follows: a. and c. to maximum and b.
very low (you may need to experiment with b.). LC "OK".

7. In the "Sound-Sound Recorder" window "Effects" there are aids to adjusting the recording including echo effect which can be applied to give a large station or terminus sound effect. (The more times you add the echo to the recording the larger the station sounds :D ).

8. Make the recording as required and when satisfied LC on "File" and name it as required. Ensure to note where you save this file!

9. Open Content Manager and search for "Play a Sound".

10. LC "Edit" and "Edit in Explorer". "Play a sound file" opens and you will see some sound files already there.

11. Now copy your recorded sound file and paste it into "play a sound file". Close the file and "commit" (LC "Edit" to do this).

12. In Trainz - Go to "Edit Session" and open "Edit" in "Driver Command". Tick "Play a Sound File". Now go to "Edit" in "Driver Setup" and LC "Play a sound file>" and LC your sound file.

I hope this is of help and you can add any sound recording using this method. There may be other ways to do this but I find this method easy for me! ;)

IWhen I listen to a real train approaching a crossing I hear a long blast followed by some short ones and then sometimes a long one again followed by a couple of short ones. That is what I am trying to recreate so that the AI trains will do that.

Well if all else fails, in Australia it is very much eaisier as a crossings are electronic and sensors pick up the trains presence leaving the driver to do more important things... In the country (Outback where there is no such convinence) i've noticed that the driver just sound a couple of short blasts unless there is cattle or people on the track.

The standed speed limit in South Australia is 90 kph. It's annoying on one particler part of the commuter line just out of the city, there is a station and the fraight depot and in betwen them is a four track level crossing. when a train is comeing from the hills or some other station and stops there it has already trigger the boom gates to lower. It's even worse when you get a fraight, but my brother and i enjoy it. You can tell the real train buffs by the ones who stick their heads out the window or get out and start taking pictures.

guards Whistle

Back to original thread, try searching for my guards whistle, kuid<165221:1092> it,s a driver command so i suggest you use these commands for the best effect. drive to station X, load, play sound file, wait for 5 seconds, drive to station Y.
The only problem that I have found is that the sound is universal so I suggest you only use it for the train you are following. It's a bit off putting to hear the whistle if you are following another train.
have fun
