You! Off my planet.
Here is a site to help set things straight. it's called GPU Review, and it has everything you want to know about graphics cards.
Also, to clear the confusion, the 8800GT and the 9800GT have the SAME EXACT PERFORMANCE STATISTICS, just different generations! Also, the ATI Radeon HD 4870X2 is the most powerful graphics chip(s), that is, at the moment of August 19, 2008.
It feels like you might want to go for ATI at the moment, like a 3870, 4850, or if you have the money, a 4870 or 4870 X2.
Another reason is that some of nVidia's G92/G94 chips recently have started failing.
The G92 Chips are in the 8800GT, 8800GS, 8800GTS, 9600GSO, 9800GTX, 9800GX2, and the 9800GT. The G94 Chip is in the 9600GT only. This is only on some cards, though, and shouldn't be much of a problem as nVidia is looking into it. It is only affecting about 15-20% of the cards, though.
ATI's 4850 & 4870 can challenge or even beat the 8800GTX & 9800GTX's, so it really is a tie for now, and go with who you like best. For me, it's ATI, but I've had cards from both and got good results.
So pretty much, unless you are going for most powerful 4870 X2 at this time, then go with whoever you like better, you are likely to get exellent results with either.
Some recommendations:
From ATI: HD3870, 4850, 4870, 4870 X2
From nVidia: 8800GT, 8800GTX/Ultra, 9800GT, 9800GTX, 9800GX2, GTX260, GTX 280, and whatever dual chip solution they come out with next.
I really hope this doesn't end up locked because of fires & flames!
Hope this clears the smoky air!
-Kyle
