Where's my drivers?

Another strange happening in 22pe. I have 6 locos placed in surveyor and when I go into drive the session there's only 3 locos listed with drivers in them. I have to assign drivers in the remaining locos every time I go to drive the session. Started doing this last week. Will the strange things in 22 ever stop? Very frustrating.

The obvious question to ask is what are your Driver Setup Rule settings?

I normally have the options:-
  • Remove all existing Drivers first - set OFF
  • Generate new Drivers for empty trains - set ON
  • (don't forget to Save after exiting the Session Editor)
and never have that problem

The interesting question is after 20 years with trainz this problem never existed. I place a loco in surveyor, save before exiting and when I went into drive a session the loco's had engineers. 3 of the 6 locos that I placed originally came with engineers and don't have to add drivers each time I run the session. I've never set or had to set up driver rules. The locos came with a driver when it was placed in surveyor.

In my experience there has been the odd occasion in past versions/builds where this has happened. But with all the session testing that I am currently doing in the latest builds of Trainz Plus and TRS22PE I have yet to experience it again.

It did happen, but it would put drivers in engines that you did not use for running a schedule. It meant having to remove drivers from engines that were in sheds or laid up.

In an earlier Trainz Plus build (pre SP5) I occasionally found a new driver or two appearing that did not have any locos assigned them (there were none available). That has not occurred (so far) in SP5.

The question remains is why when I pick a loco in surveyor and it does show the driver, and it's placed somewhere on the layout and saved before exiting and then when I go into drive the session the driver is not in the locomotive. Every time now I have to assign a driver to whatever loco I previously put in surveyor when I'm in drive session mode. Like I've stated a week ago I never had this problem until now. A bug of some kind?

Are you placing the locomotives (consists) in the route or in a session? According to N3V, trains need to be placed in a session and not on the route.

I've always placed locomotives in the route that I'm building in surveyor mode and never had any problem. When I would go into the session the locomotive and driver would be there. This is not the case now. Now the locomotive is there in the session but not the driver. I have to put a driver in that locomotive. If I Exit the session and save it when I go back into the session, I have to put a driver back into the locomotive again.

That's because things are out of sync. I ran into this issue a while ago on my small Gloucester Terminal trolley route. I had inadvertently placed trolleys on the route in the Route editor instead of the Session editor. I was just setting up the session and there weren't any other trolleys on the route which meant I couldn't tell I was in the wrong place.

In the session, I added my drivers to all my trolleys as I set up the driver schedules. All the drivers except for those placed in the route editor and not in the session editor had drivers. I ended up deleting the trolleys I placed in the route and replaced them again in the session.

After that, I still had drivers with incorrect names. The drivers listed in Driver setup did not match the drivers in the session and I ended up replacing the drivers in Driver setup to match those in the trolley cars. Eventually, everything clicked and it has worked since.

Now a driver may show up depending on the locomotive I place in surveyor and will be there in a session. An intermittent occurrence now. 22 is behaving strange.

The arrival of the UDS (Unified Driver Surveyor) in TRS19PE changed the way that routes and sessions worked. The recommendation now is that all consists should be placed into session layers and not into route layers.

When a consist is active in a route its current position is stored in the session, even if the consist has been placed into a route. That can cause issues, for example: when the route is reloaded without the session.

Now, I do not know if this change has anything to do with the issue that @Alco_P-A is experiencing but, like @WestSideRailways, I have not experienced any problems as soon as I started following this rule.

So, I'm not understanding in my 20 years of building routes in surveyor that this strange driver problem with locomotives started a week and a half ago. I have never worked with layers and never placed consists in sessions and everything has worked fine. All my editing in my routes is in surveyor, then saved, then exit, then go into drive the session and all is fine. All locomotives have their engineers with their names up until recently. Yesterday I placed a locomotive in surveyor and the engineer was there and working fine when I opened the session. I tried another locomotive and when the session was opened, I had to place an engineer in that locomotive. If I save a session and reopen it, I have to place engineers in those locomotives again, and again, and again and so on. Very frustrating.

The problem is, our environment we've known since the early days has changed while the interface has remained the same since UDS was introduced a couple of years ago, it might be more or less than that, I can't remember.

When UDS was introduced, N3V said that the recommended practice is to build in the route-building side of Surveyor and do all session editing in the Session-creation side of Surveyor. What this does is place the appropriate assets in separate layers needed to operate a route. The separate modes now cause a disconnect between the route and the session even though they are associated.

In the olden days, we built routes in Surveyor and drove them in Driver. If we wanted something permanent, we'd create a session to drive again. Then Universal-Driver-Surveyor (UDS) was introduced around the same time that multi-player Surveyor (MPS) was developed. In MPS you can build a route while other people are driving at the same time. This is quite an experience and I enjoyed my time with it during the beta. UDS allows a single-user, on their local Trainz install to jump directly into Surveyor and modify things you found while in Driver. In theory, this is awesome but it comes with its drawbacks such as saving the session while saving the route during a fix and we end up with drivers out of their starting positions with no way to reposition them again without editing the session. Going from Surveyor to Driver in UDS, which is similar to the old Quick Drive, is great for checking ATLS and other scripted assets to ensure that they are working properly, and to test consists such as those with pantographs to ensure that they reach the overhead wires.

In a nutshell, we now have to watch what we're doing and tread carefully and thoughtfully rather than just do what we were doing what we were doing all along.

So, I should build my routes in surveyor and place my consists in sessions?

So, I tried editing a Sesson and put a consist with locomotive, save and exited and reopened the Sesson and no driver in locomotive. Had to put one in. Maybe it's me or the game? So, what's the correct way to place consists and a locomotive so this issue stops happening? Tired of picking drivers. :(

Create a new session. It'll be easier.
Remove all your existing consists you placed on the route.
Place your consists.
Assign drivers in Driver setup.

There are options at the bottom of the Driver setup screen. Check the ones you want to use.
You should be all set now.
