What Trainz games can I use with a 'normal' PC ?

Hi Trainz guys,
The issue I have is that I don't have a super-dooper PC and I purchased the latest Trainz 12 forr my young son, but it would not work on our home PC - but some of the earlier 'simple' Trainz games do. I had to return it to the store.
So without spending a fortune, what older Trainz games are available for purchase for my son that will work on a 'normal' PC ?
Question more for Trainz than the general forum
Thanks

You need to post the specification of the system you'd be running it on.

For a starting point for you look at my spec, in my signature, below - I can run 09 easily on that. I think I could run rural lines with lower demand from 2010 on that too, but probably struggle with busier urban routes.

As well as your computer specifications, it might be helpful to give the age of your young son. If very young, TRS2004 might be appropriate as it is simpler than the most recent, but he would not be able to access the Download Station for additional content without your paying for a First Class Ticket. Would this be an issue? If however you would like him to be excluded for any reason from downloading or spending time on these forums - and there is plenty of content for driving and route building in 2004 - then that version might be suitable. You could always progress to a later version if in the future you buy a new computer.

As an example, I would consider TRS2004 to be ideal as a starter for a 7-year-old who has some knowledge of computers. (Some are probably experts at that age!) Others of course may well disagree with my views.

Without knowing your computer specs, I would guess that either 04 or 06 would work OK. I previously ran 06 on a 5 year old laptop with 2 GB of ram total and it was fine with any of the built-in routes. Down side is that you will not be able to use any of the newer better detailed assets (Trainz 09 and up).

You are aware that there are performance sliders to accommodate slower PCs.

TS2009/10/12 will all make use of dual core cpus and need a less powerful PC to run the same content giving the same frame rate as the older versions provided you have the viewing distance set to a low value. TRS2004 default is one km I think, TS2009 is five which makes a considerable difference to amount of memory and things that the cpu has to juggle with. Some of the newer content is more demanding.

Bargain basement TS2006 will work on a half decent 10 year old PC. Once "hooked" you will be out there buying a super computer for TS 20XX.

(TS2009 onwards require a reasonable graphics card)

Enjoy.
