What simulator to buy???

John: How much of an improvement is TS2012 over 2010. I have seen and compared the trees with other tree versions (Trunda) and I must say the trees aren't all that impressive. Is there a major leap in graphics beyind the trees, or is it pretty much the same as 2010?

Nope ....... You will be better off with 12.

The only problem i would see with getting 2012 is that being the newest game, it will obviously have the hardest impact but that's my only criticism... useing a laptop makes you think like me.. :hehe:

Well I took the plunge. And I mean I REALLY took the plunge. I ordered the Trainz 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition. I sure hope it's as good as most folks say.

I think you will be happy with it. ~smiles~ I am looking foward to playing it once I get home from work in about an hour. ( from time of post )

Hardest part is going to be waiting 3 weeks for delivery. :(
Maybe I'll get a gold ticket? Sure could use a lifetime subscription to the DLS...hint-hint nudge-nudge know wht I mean Auran?:D

BUY RAILWORKS!
They never learn, do they? :hehe:
Soon they'll have to change the forums to the 'Railworks Fan Club' Forums.

BUY TRAINZ!
Now there's something I'd like to see on the forums.

Being honest, buy 2009 or later. Then you have access to the advantages of the new features. Just my humbe opinion.

I have TS2006 and TS2009. I see that TS12 is now available. I am not interested in multi player but would like enhanced graphics. TC2010 has a new SpeedTree feature that looks enticing. I wonder if TC12 is just TC2010 with a multi player module or does it have additional features. To summarize, should I jump to TS12 or TS2010 if I am looking for better graphics and perhaps some new routes?

Also, the latest newsletter showed two sims that look interesting. Classic Carbon City and Murehinson 2. Any comments on these products?

I wish there was a definitive listing of the features and routes provided for each Trainz product. Perhaps there is one and I just haven't found it.

I bought Murchison II and was so impressed I bought Carbon City and SETTLE and CARLISLE the very next day. But Murchison II is so big and beautiful and amazing, I haven't even finished exploring half of that yet and haven't had a chance to look at the other two but they do indeed look really great.

I have them running great on a unpatched version of TS2010 build 42203. From what I've seen from Auran in their long history, you might be safer with 2010 than TS12 though I have never tried TS12. It's just that Auran has a habit of releasing products in an Alpha test state with lots of issues.

Pity the person who says here.....buy RW.:)

Have fun,

Got them both :P but alas, spended 3 hours in RW2 accourding to steam and 200+ allready in Trainz 12, in wich most are spend in Surveyor..

Guess it shows wich one i prefer :P

RW2 feels like... wel.... ermm... i wont say it out loud, prolly will insult some console gamers by it ;)

I loved one of the old trainz versions and when 2010 came out, I snapped it up eagerly.
Alas, it never worked on my laptop and when I inquired I was informed that it clearly said in the box it would not work well in laptops. It did, in tiny print that was not visible online.
So: Does 2012 work on laptops? I have a Dell Inspiron with Intel core duo and the memory and such exceed the requirements.

well, ts12 has some great new routes, trains, and better graphics, but ts12 only has about ten routes. Auran could have at least added some old routes, but seriously, seventy USD just for ten routes?

There is definitely an improvement in the graphics. The draw distance is longer and it's faster even in driver. The color seems more vivid, textures are less washed out than in the older versions. Overall for some reason the older versions of Trainz had blah texturing - pretty much phong like, and the flipboard trees, while current technology in 2000, really needed to go because they were a performance hog.

Personally I had given up on the old alpha-blended trees long before Auran had done officially, and was hoping years ago that they would go away anyway because they never looked good. I was constantly looking for trees from different makers, and had to finally settle on only a few that performed well and looked nice. This is a hard combination to work with.

Anyway when the Treez pack came out for TS2009, I ditched the alpha-blended constructions for them, although they were somewhat out of scale in some cases. Today I use both the Treez trees and the Speed Trees as well as third-party Speed Trees.

Now most people snicker and complain about the ST, but given that most people today complain about everything, it's only natural. The advantage to the Speed Trees is that the program uses the GPU to render instead of relying on the CPU to draw the trees. This gives the CPU more time to concentrate on AI functions and program running rather than needing to do a task that can now be done in the GPU, which in many cases is just as fast as the CPU and has also a lot more pipes than a CPU does internally. Many people complain about the performance with these, but honestly I see better performance than I had with the old alpha-blended creations. There is also one thing to remember too. With SpeedTreez, you can get nice coverage with fewer of them, and not notice the difference. The thing is, you need to choose the trees that are close to the ones you have in your area. I use maples, oaks, birches, their English Tree, which looks like popular, and conifer variants.

When I go back and run programs, such as Operation Flashpoint, or MSTS I cringe when I see the foliage. This is the same technology that was used in Trainz until TS2010 came out. You can see the alpha channel outline the branches of the trees no matter how much the developer tried to hide it.

When I get a chance, I will post some screenshots of my work-in-progress update to GFisher's (George Fisher's) Gloucester Terminal Railway, whch I've electrified with trolley lines for passenger service.

I hate that boring whistle ... it got old, really quick.

I do like the walking zombies that go deliberately up to the DD40X, and talk to it.:hehe:

I'm still waiting for the answer to my question .

Yes it does the Blue Comet and the PRR T1 both have excellent steam effects. TrainzItalia has also done a Bigboy and some other steam. The Y6B included in TS12 is also really nice.

hert:wave:

Speaking of walking zombies, how about the suicidal drives in TS2010? Not only do they drive in front of approaching trains, most times they totally ignore the lowered crossing gates and drive right through them, and then drive right through the trains!!! I distinctly remember cars stopping at crossing gates in TRS2004. Is this a bug or do the drivers/cars have some kind of dimensional shift going on where they can pass through solid objects?

G'day,

That's a reflection of the times we live in, there are a lot of suicidal people around nowadays.:hehe:

Have a good one,
E.C.
