What is the 'Safe' and workable CDP size.

What is the safe and workable size of a CDP? I've heard everything from 500MB to 2GB.

I don't want to be stuffing CDPs with content only not to be able to open them later.

Thanks,

John

I believe it's version and service pack dependent. For earlier versions, Trainz had problems with CDP files over 512MB, but newer ones may be able to handle up to 2GB from what I've gathered.

I agree with ns37,

I use 220 mb for the biggest files, but normally only around ~120mb...it works all the time :) never needed such big files, i aways split them.

I think CDP is the magic word here, guys! We're looking at transferring whole routes between users, and CDP is the way to go. NOT archive!

Hi Guys,

Thank you. I'll keep my CDP file no bigger than 512MB to be on the safe size as I heard that too regarding the size up to 2GB. What I don't want is create write-only files so I just wanted to make sure!

Yes, these will be for transfer between two or more of us during a project and this is good to know anyway especially because I am always backing up my working routes to CDP files. I don't care so much that the scenery items get tossed, but having a decade old route get munched is a bit disheartening to say the least.

In theory, the format can go up to 2GB, but most users will run into memory problems when trying to extract a file of that size. Our internal limit at N3V is around 800MB; this is small enough that nobody should hit any issues in current Trainz versions.

Depends what you are doing with them :-)

If you are using them for archive, and you know the machine you'll be re-installing them on, you can test out what the limits are on that machine. If it's a 64 bit machine, you'll probably find the limit is somewhere around 1.2GiB to 1.4GiB.

If you are using them for distribution, then you need to think about all machines, not just one. In particular, 32 bit machines have a much lower limit - something around 900MiB. And each machine is different depending on hardware and drivers. We work with an 800MiB target max internally and don't see problems regularly distributing CDPs this large. We did see regular problem reports at significantly larger sizes (e.g. 1.1GiB).

If you ever get stuck with a CDP that you can't install in Content Manager, try the TrainzUtil command line installer. It has a slightly higher limit than Content Manager does, and that might get you out of trouble :)

John,

I've run into problems > 500 or so Gb, even on an x64 machine that runs Trainz like a breeze. That might have been with TS2010, I forget, but I think following your instinct is the safe way to go. It's better to have a too-small file that works than a too-big file that doesn't.

Gentlemen, thanks for you responses. I think we can live with a 800Mb limit. If it fits the Trainz Team needs, I'm sure it'll fit ours. Specifically we're trying to figure out how to get several folks to work on a single route map. Best we can come up with is passing the map around, allowing each to do his/her thing and then passing it on.
