What hardware do you run TS on?

It helps use the right tool for the job, rather than just buying the most expensive hardware Newegg has for bragging rights...or for some kind of compensation...:hehe:

Remember “beware of those who have more experience/knowledge than you with the subject”:hehe::o

Yes, please remember. Sorry if I like to point and laugh though. :)

I’m sure you’re very familiar with that mentality especially when something here is said that you don’t want to hear.

Yes, ignorance has become dangerous for some.:(

Yes, it is. So is arrogance, because whenever you enter a forum, you prove yourself to be arrogant time and again and it's pretty obvious most people here if not everybody realizes it. The kicker is, if you knew at all what you were doing, you could give people advice within certain parameters rather than buy the most expensive toy available.

Nope, I just base my recommendations on what I know from experience works, not recommendations for others based solely on my budget.

Sorry but if you run all the settings in Trainz at max, at high resolution with decent image quality along with a healthy dose of A.I. on a detailed route, yes you are going need some very good hardware to run it. That is unless you’re satisfied with slide show performance.

That is unless you’re satisfied with slide show performance.
Check out my machine specs ^^^
I don't get "slide show performance", there's not much that makes it stutter either, my old
box used to be quite bad, but I built this one on a very tight budget & it works. :p

You've got a point here.
I think if I could upgrade my mobo, cpu, and memory, I could use my current GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB and get better performance.
My "Windows Experience Index" is only 3.7, and the lowest component is the CPU. If I replaced the mobo, cpu & RAM, I would get 5.9. If I could do all that for around $200, I think I would go for it. And, if I'm not upgrading video, I might be able to get away with keeping the 550W PSU.

It seems that most Trainzers are running dual core, and much faster RAM than I have. That seems to be where my bottleneck is.

FW

Regarding the Windows Experience Index, my current machine gets 7.3 for every component except "Disk Transfer Rate" which is 5.9. Since my "C" Drive is a 10,000 RPM Velociraptor I was a bit suprised so I did a bit of Searching on computers and one guy said "The only way you can get more than 5.9 on DTT is to use a Solid State Hard Drive" which seems a bit of a bummer?

Nor do I. I'm guessing some people just aren't tweaking their machines properly.

XP runs well, better than Win7 or Vista according to some tests, probably due to less overhead. It's not like Trainz uses DX11... :p

But, yeah, Compaq's do suck performance-wise, but really all OEMs do IMO. They're durable, at least. I have some old ones from 1998 and older I use for DOS gaming and hardware tinkering.

that is true at this point im going to dump my MSTS game cause it is preety large in size.. 714 piceces of rolling stock im going to actully wipe the downloads file...

Great, then let’s see it.

Post some screen shots with Fraps using one of more detailed routes in TS2010 with the image quality cranked up.:D

Last week I upgraded from a core2duo E6300 to a Sandy Bridge 2500K which I have overclocked to 4.6Ghz combined with a GTX460, 4GB DDR3.

Is amazing I haven't been able to get the FPS below 100 so far.

If you can’t wait for LGA 2011 (the 1366/X58 "performance" replacement) then yes Sandy Bridge (LGA 1155/P67 chipset) is the way to go right now, and being Intel’s “mainstream” platform it’s also very affordable.

How about some screen shots of one of the detailed default routes in TS2010 so we can see what kind of performance you’re getting?

New Guy

Hi all...new user here. Started out with MSTS and gave it up when Microsoft stopped supporting it. Picked up again with TS 2010 EE. Here are my specs...

Dell Studio XPS 9000
Intel Core i7-920 processor (8MB L3 Cache 2.66GHz)
12GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz
21.5" Dell SX2210 Full HD Monitor
1 Gig ATI Radeon HD 5870
1TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive 7200 RPM
1.5 TB External HP Hard Drive
Windows 7 Professional, 64bit
Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium
RailDriver Desktop Train Cab Controller

I guess I've been lucky (based on many of the posts here.) Installation and patching went smoothly -- although a bit time consuming -- and DLS with a FCT has been a breeze on the FTP side. I really don't have many complaints with this simulator (...although I'm sure there's time!) Pretty fun so far!

Jim

After not playing it for a good portion of a year or so, I'm currently installing Trainz 2010 once again.

Old System Specs:
ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 (64-bit. 2GB DDR1 or DDR2 max. DDR1/DDR2 crossover design)
3.0 GHz Dual Core P4 (64-bit)
2GB Geil DDR1 (400MHz) RAM
ASUS NVidia 9400GT 1GB PCI-E (Low Profile)
550W ThermaltakeEvo Blue
80GB Western Digital WD800JD-75MSA1 (OS drive)
500GB Seagate Barracuda ST3500418AS (main Data)
ASUS DRW-0402P/D DVD ±R/RW
ASUS DRW-2014L1-T DVD ±R/RW Lightscribe
Windows XP Professional SP2 (32-bit)

New System Specs:
Dell Optiplex 745 BTX Mobo (chassis & optical)
2.13GHz Core2Duo E6400 (64-bit)
8GB (4x 2GB chips) Kingston DDR2 (667MHz) RAM
ASUS NVidia 9400GT 1GB PCI-E (Low Profile)
200GB Seagate Barracuda (OS & Data drive)
Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit (90-day trial edition)

The new system gets a Win7 score of 5.0 (Aero Graphics), whilst the other marks are 5.3 (CPU), 5.4 (RAM), 5.8 (gaming graphics) and 5.4 (hard drive).
I'll also eventually change from 7Ent to 7Pro (again, 64-bit) by the time the 90-day trial is up, maybe having even gotten a new board and CPU for the system by then as well.

Also, for those wondering, the 745 cost me under $400 AUD ~SHIPPED~ from Zazz.com.au as Factory Refurbish, on one of the 2-3 monthly rotations when they put up factory refurbished systems at fairly decent prices (usually with a choice of Linux or Windows for each system).

If your eyes were as fast as my computer, you would notice I only run TRS2004 (which has been posted on this forum to be heavier than TS2010, due to it's errors & crude programming), I don't own TS2010, so your request is impossible. :p

Posted by whom, anyone with any real incite on what makes Trainz tick?

Let’s see your results of running TRS2004 in all its glory on your setup then.:o
