What hardware do you run TS on?

Approach_Medium

I would have created a poll for this, but since there are so many variables in system configuration, I think a regular post is the best.

So, what version of TS do you run, what OS, and what hardware do you run it on?

I run TS2010 SP3 in Open GL mode, on the following:

Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1 (RC) installed.

Asus P5AD2-E Premium mobo (6yrs old!!)
P4, 3.4Ghz (single core)
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB
3Gigs 533Mhz DDR2 RAM
HDD: 500GB SATA with 8MB cache at 7200 RPM
Display: Samsung SyncMaster 24" wide screen @ 1920 X 1080

I have to run TS at max draw distance of 3Km or frame rate drops to unacceptable rate in moderately complex scenes.

So, what are you running?

So far, I'm the low man on the totem pole. 6yrs I need an upgrade, but no $$ right now.

Look at Tigerdirect's barebones kits. While I wouldn't actually go with most of their kits (the power supplies are too weak) they serve as a starting point and you can get a good system cheap. You can do pretty nicely for a little over $200 if you can scrape that up. Just something to think about.

That depends on what you consider fine.

You’re idea of "fine" performance/image quality might differ greatly from what someone who has experience with other sims/games might consider fine or even acceptable.

If you keep your eyes on Ebay (or the equivalent in your part of the world) you can often find reasonable bargains in Motherboard Bundles.
This one has a dual core CPU, a decent GPU and 4GB of RAM.

You've got a point here.
I think if I could upgrade my mobo, cpu, and memory, I could use my current GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB and get better performance.
My "Windows Experience Index" is only 3.7, and the lowest component is the CPU. If I replaced the mobo, cpu & RAM, I would get 5.9. If I could do all that for around $200, I think I would go for it. And, if I'm not upgrading video, I might be able to get away with keeping the 550W PSU.

It seems that most Trainzers are running dual core, and much faster RAM than I have. That seems to be where my bottleneck is.

XP runs well, better than Win7 or Vista according to some tests, probably due to less overhead. It's not like Trainz uses DX11... :p

But, yeah, Compaq's do suck performance-wise, but really all OEMs do IMO. They're durable, at least. I have some old ones from 1998 and older I use for DOS gaming and hardware tinkering.

I am running trainz 2006 and trainz classics. Mainly use trainz classics. Here are the specs.

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium (SP2)
Intel Pentium Inside Dual CPU T3400
2.16 GHz
Intel 4 series express chipset family
130GB out of 218GB
1 TB external hard drive

Mainly use Direct X 10 to get the special water effects.

Trainz runs better on Windows 98 or ME because it’s cheaper, lol.:hehe:

Make sure you use FAT 32 also.:o

It helps use the right tool for the job, rather than just buying the most expensive hardware Newegg has for bragging rights...or for some kind of compensation...:hehe:
