What are trig stations?

Just noticed a mention of this, when searching for a way to translate the Japanese Degrees decimal minute coordinates that I am totally unfamiliar with, as long/lat coordinates. I noticed that the lat/long identifier/whatever it is on the DLS is a little inaccurate, and gives me no idea of where to place the track, in a corridor that is made of dense bushland, with only the faintest hint of where the right of way went. There is no info on the internet about them from what I can tell. I just happened to notice them on the TransDEM forum.

Any info would be useful.

Thanks.

Know what TRIG Markers are....
it is the precise location of grid co-ords.
Trig points or Triangulation Pillars are another way of spotting the top of a mountain on a map. The symbol for a trig point is a small triangle. check goggle.
