Water Color

dricketts

Trainz Luvr since 2004
I've been meaning to ask this for awhile but I've been sidetracked with other Trainz projects.

How do you change the color or how opaque water is? My water is always bright blue and very clear. I need more of a brown, muddy, cloudy, or dirty looking water for my part of the country.

Thanks

I haven't played much with water, but the one I have is probably the same color you want... all I did was lower the ground where the texture was already "sandy".... then added water, and it turned out brownish...

I've always changed the 'water colour' by using an appropriate ground texture in the water area to get the desired reult - for example, a muddy texture (prototypical).

Just use the three color dials at the top of where you click on the water function. Drag them around and you will see the water color change .
It's in the window that allows you to pick different sky colors and set the sky hues.

drickitts: In surveyor click on the world tab, click on the water color in the little window, this opens up your colors wheels..Dials with three colors, Green, Blue & Red..Turn the red dial slowly(Turn to Right) to achieve what you want..You may have tweak the other colors to get exact..

I'm using 2004. When I change the dials it changes the colors for the entire game.

Am I missing something?

dricketts: You have make sure that you clicking on Water Color only window..Otherwise you will be in the wrong mode..

Mentioned some time ago it would be useful to have the actual colour value (0 - 256) attached to each dial. That way, you could use PSP or similar to pick a suitable water colour from an image then set those values in the sim. You can still kind of do it that way, but only approximately.

As regards base textures, I tend to use Creek1 for riverbeds, maybe mix in a bit of gravel on the edges or in the case of a coastline maybe some pebble texture. However as with any texture painting, what you *think* might look right from real life doesn't always come over quite the same way when painted on the ground and much trial and error is required.

Drickets, if you're still having a bad trot, have a look at JadeBullet's 2010 Route Building Competition screenshots. Particularly this one:

If that's what you want, may I suggest you PM JadeBullet. I'm sure he'll be able to help you.

2004

In 2004 if you use the dials, then all the water changes to that selected new colour throughout the game. It's an annoying thing but it would be near impossible to have options in game to allow a variety of different hues for each area of water.
The only way is to have a very shallow water level and use ground textures to get the desired colour.
It's a problem I hit a lot when building my WCL routes where I had canals of one colour and ponds/lakes that really needed to be another colour. The ponds got to be very shallow with an appropriate texture base. It doesn't notice anyway, you're not going to go paddling, are you!

Apologies for the bump.

I've just come across this thread after a break.

Couple of ideas.

Sky colour makes a big difference to water colour, as does time of day and angle of view. Endless combinations there!

You can also create your own water by using textures only. This trick overcomes the flickery shallow water edge problem, and avoids the sharp pointy edges you get with terrain to water transitions. You can also position it at any height, without effecting the height of other (proper) water areas. It wont be reflective though.

Here's an example.

BTW Anyone remember Bob Ross, the TV artist? - He used to say, "We don't make mistakes, we just have happy accidents".

I've put in some shadows, and some other garbage. They are all his as well.

All on DLS.

Tip (no pun intended) of the day - go get all of his stuff. It's great.

Thank you very much. I've seen it for the first time in a screenshot from Trainz Resources Directory and I have searched for it much time without result.
Cheers
