Video needs reducing in size

I've got a 30 sec video clip done in Frapps, but it's 152MBs too big. The total file size is 252MB. I don't want to cut it, so is there anyway to reduce the frame size from full-screen to half?

Widows Movie Maker (free with XP and newer I think) - not sure if you can specify formats, but just importing and exporting a FRAPS clip dramatically reduces the file size...

There are several free video converters around. I'm too busy to do a search for you but whenever you look for something for free in Google, never use the word free! Always use "Open Source". Most of the free stuff is free to download but often not to use, howeverr Open Source is definitely "Free". I got my 30 second FRAPS videos down to 3 - 4 meg a minute. I think YouTube et-al prefers Flash and YouTube has a whole big information-packed section on how to convert videos, and it's very good!. I hope that all helps.

Thanks Johnk for that excellent information. I like the free/try before you buy programs. I've spent too much money on stuff that didn't work as I wanted.

As soon as I got your reply I remembered the program I used. it's called VirtualDubMod and it's an offshoot (fork) of VirtualDub. It can be downloaded from AfterDawn who are very reliable. This program is truly amazing but gee, is it difficult to use? Fortunately there are thousands of tutorials out there on every facet of the million things this pragram can do. You could start here.

If nothing works, it probably means that you don't have the right Codecs installed. I used a pack called K-Lite. I downloaded the standard pack which also includes Media Player Classic, a program that plays most of the things Windows Media Player won't.

I can see it okay, but it's like a whole heap of still pictures in a slide show. If I get time (don't hold your breath) I'll try to remember the settings for virtualdubmod. I was half way through writing a tutorial then TRS 2009 came out. I dropped everything to look at that. Anyway, K-lite will solve the viewing problem.

Excellent! I've watched a lot of stuff on YouTube and I'm not joking when I say yours is the best I've seen when it comes to smoothness. Just keep up the fantastic work then pleaseeeee share it with the rest of the community:
  • What you used
  • The settings
  • Conversion process etc.
If you write a tutorial, I can host it on my site for you.

John
