Using the Paste Tool with Layers

dricketts

Trainz Luvr since 2004
I want to use the paste tool to new ground cover to areas that already have decisively placed trees that I don't want moved or disturbed. I assumed as long as I created a new layer then use the past tool it shouldn't disturb what trees are already there. Not happening. When using the paste tool in a new layer while the old layer is locked it still removes the old scenery objects. What gives? Does the paste tool override all layers regardless? Anyone else found a fix?

Thanks in advance...

"Does the paste tool override all layers regardless?"

I think you could be right - as far as I can remember (and I am getting old) the paste tool, from the earliest versions of Trainz, has always replaced whatever was originally there.

In TS12, the paste tool will remove objects pre-existing in the paste rectangle even if their layer is locked, so the paste tool pays no attention to layering. There is a safety feature with this, one cannot paste into an area containing elements on a hidden layer without being prompted to turn the layer visible first, so TS12 ensures you see what you are pasting over. The fact that this safety feature exists means the programmer was well aware that the paste tool ignores layering.

However, the paste tool does discriminate between textures, track, objects, and topography. Therefore you can paste track, for example, into a grove of trees without affecting the trees, and the layers of each will be preserved.

I am wondering if the route merging tool can accomplish your example (which involves pasting scenery objects onto scenery objects).

Select and deselect the stuff you want to paste (and replace) or not want to paste (or replace). This is done by selecting or deselecting the 4 icons in that same tab.

Ground texture ignores layers, but turn off objects and the trees will stay where they are while the ground texture gets replaced.

... Or at least that is how it works in TS12.

I'm following you but I'm using the paste tool for objects only. I want to "paste" new objects without disturbing the existing ones.

Sadly this can't be done. It's too bad that copying and pasting works only in a replacement mode. It would be nice if there was an option for additive pasting such as the case that you need. I asked for this in one of the suggestion posts ages ago.

I was expected my IT guru to say something to the effect of "...it does not function like other layered object-oriented programs..."
