ugly trains

Why does this remind me of Sonic The Hedgehog? :hehe:

Hey guys, I noticed this photo of a loco in "Heritage Railway Magazine" - Now at first I thought it was an old innovative steam engine that maybe a good 'modeller' could re-create a replica for Trainz;... and I was going to call it "Spikey". BUT then I realised, that in fact it had actually suffered a boiler explosion. I don't think I'd like to be the driver when that happened.

Be more then just a bit hard on him for sure.

On the other hand that loco would be a neat addition to Trainz in the pre boom condition.

It sure would, ... but then I don't know the make, model and serial number of the loco. The guy standing at the front of the train reminds me of the 'Ticket Inspector' (Stephen Lewis), in the BBC TV series "On the Buses" with Reg Varney.

They just don't make things like they used to...

And there are times when that is good!

Look what I found..:hehe:

Yet again ,in my book's, nothing's ugly.. :hehe: Though I must admit, it's a bit oversized isn't it? I suppose it was meant for flexibility..:o

It does kind of make you wonder why it has 4-wheel bogeys on each end doesn't it.

If they filled the frames full of lead and added traction motors to all 4 axles it would definitely increase tractive effort.

Ben

I believe the purpose of doing that was so that the weight of the locomotive was spread evenly over the axles. If those extra bogeys weren't there, it'd break every bridge it travelled over.

The reason for the four wheels in front of the main bogies , was to help guide the main thought switches and curves . But How could ya call a box-cab ugly:hehe: BTW that's the same configuration on the GG1

Not sure if this is photo-shopped or genuine, if it's real, then well.... speak about recycling...

I'm going to express an honest opinion on the GWR's streamlining attempt with Steam locomotives...

It was meant to resemble similar to an A4....

It looks awful, the part above the main driving wheels(NOT including the boiler) is great.

The rest looks like it was bloody stuck on in a god awful attempt to 'streamline' the engine and the round bullet shaped nose looks like it would crumble in a head on collison..

It had the nerve to be called Semi Streamlined? :/ What in the GREAT BRUNEL were they thinking?

Brunel himself probably rolled over in his grave, in digust and shame, even a tear, the name meant nothing for this locomotive....
I'm semi intrested in the locomtive, the other part of me disgusted! It brings shame to streamlining!
I don't care that it was a non-streamlined build originally, that didn't stop the LNER's brand new streamlined P2 looking great.

Heck, the LMS pulled off UN-streamling for god sake and it really shone, the beautiful new apperance gave the locomotives a look that is blessed with romance.

But seriously, what was the Great Western Railway thinking? Shudder, I gringe and cry...

Sidenote:Leaping in joy finding FGW rebranded as GWR since 2015!

If you read Streamline Steam by A.J.Mullay you will find that Collett's streamlining may not have been just based on sticking some bits of plasticine on a model but was based on the work of Chapman Dendy Marshall in 1919. After all the GWR didn't need this 1930s streamlining fad; they were fast enough already.

This locomotive is very odd, the cab is WWWAAAYYY too high, the wheel arrangement is very weird (a 6-2-0) and that funnel, is it really necessary?

Plus the driver wouldn't be able to see where he is going directly infront of him.

But one good point, it might have been the inspiration to the Baltimore and Ohio "Norris" 4-2-0.
