ugly trains

I was thinking the same thing. Whilst American diesels are not ugly per se, they really aren't particularly attractive. Functional, but not really visually appealing. British and European diesels are much nicer to look at IMO, especially the early ones like the Deltic prototype, the Westerns and Warships, and 'Lion' and 'Kestrel'. The Alco FAs/PAs, the Baldwin RF16s and the F- and E- series streamliners are beautiful though, but the latter might have lasted longer if EMD had come up with a double-cabbed variant.

I read somewhere that dual-cabbed US locos wouldn't be as effective since the trips are longer between turnings, although there are some locos that have 2 control stands so they can operate in both directions. Usually in the US 2 units are ran end to end so their cabs ace out, so the set can be operated in both directions.

Yes. Been in service for nearly 65 years.

(Definitely not ugly)

This Rail Tractor might fit into the definition of ugly...

looks like you get to E units for the price of one! or there was two F units that got the back hacked off, and stuck the open ends together.

Portland Westside Express Service aka "WES commuter rail". Now, this is sure. Americans can't make good DMUs or cab cars.

Some cab cars can look good, but THIS...

I NEED BLEACH.
And we wonder why people drive in front of Amtrak trains? If you saw this, you would definitely drive in front of it to get that horror from your eyes.
Everyone who designed this needs to go drink bleach. (I am not copying your "I need bleach", that is actually a catch phrase of mine, like "go jump in front of a double decker bus")

Someone had to do this. British trains until 1980s.
