ugly trains

Pretty much the United Kingdom of England is kind of complicated in its naming. Correct me if I am wrong but the UK and England refer to the empire as a whole, and included Scotland, Wales, and Britain and some more places that I am forgetting I think. Britain on the other hand refers to the country of Britain only. It is kind of like a state, but also different.

Correct me if I am wrong though. I am American so I don't have the best understanding of how the procedures of the UK are carried out though I am extremely eager to learn.

Close, Great Britain is made up of England/Wales/Scotland and Northern Ireland :)

GB is Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales.

England is the country, Britain can either be the British Empire, or the big island

The UK (To give its full name The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) is a country. This is made up of 4 Nations: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (these are NOT countries, but some would like to be). Great Britain refers to England, Wales and Scotland. The British Isles refers to the all of this plus Ireland and the Isle of Man etc.

Basically the country is the UK, England is NOT a country, and Britain is a collection of islands.

@JadeBullet, ignore edh6's post above as it's completely incorrect. The UK is not a country, it is a sovereign state (or commonwealth realm) consisting of four countries, Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The term 'country' being used to refer to the UK, is done so colloquially.

Back to ugly trains?

This is a bit of a stinker, probably because it doesn't look like anything anyone is used to.

Im not sure I would totally agree. England is a country as is Scotland and Wales. However we form a single nation with a common government. Which may or may not in the near future become separate governments.

That looks like kit bashing rather than an actual loco. A bogie someone has dropped a cab on top. Wowsers.

If you're talking about the infamous 'Holman Horror', then that was already explained in detail earlier in this thread - it was just a fraud concocted by con artists trying to rort the stock market (as any mechanical engineer even remotely competent at the time would have said, 'there is no way that would work how it was meant to').

Apparently though people were gullible enough that the scammers managed to do the same trick twice in fact. From all reports the engines used in the scam ended up being rebuilt as conventional locomotives which had more or less normal working lives once their notorious pasts were forgotten.
