I would just like to point out that that is a Camel, not a Camelback. There is a difference. Camels have the cab on top of the boiler for visibility or something like that. Camelbacks have the cab astride the boiler because of the wide Wootten firebox behind the cab.
Anyway, back to ugly trains.
I personally think that these things are pretty ugly. They are just too British looking.
You could almost argue that this was the first "Safety" cab style that's so common today.

It's a win-win for us.
Not the locos, but I always hated the "Zito Yellow" scheme, at least when compared to the classic.
Unfortunately, all of my memories of the C&NW look like the former.

I just want to say that I don't hate all UK steam. I think the problem with this thread is that it focuses on what we consider to be "Ugly Locomotives" and this can make it seem that we hate all locomotives from that country if said locomotive is not an oddball locomotive.
Just because I find that LNER engines, the A2 Peppercorn in particular, are unappealing does not mean that I hate all UK steam. I am partial to GWR to tell you the truth. Also, my rant about US steam that was dolled up to look British wasn't me slamming UK engines, it was me slamming US engines set up to look like UK engines at the expense of function.
Anyway, back to Ugly Trains.
This thing. Maybe I just don't understand what its point was, but that looks particularly horrible. It is like a shovel nose without the nose.

To clarify, just because I've posted something here doesn't mean that I hate it.
Take "Old Maude" here for example. What she lacked in beauty she made up for in character. The "ugliness" is what made it interesting.
Tragically, she succumbed to the pressures and received a nose job a few years before she was assigned to the great branch line in the sky...
The Crandall Cab, however, was a monstrosity.

Awesome. I didn't know that they rebuilt the nose on those. Rebuilds are pretty cool. I like the RF-16s that the PRR threw ALCo blocks into after Baldwin went under.

Bulleid's objective was to produce a locomotive with easy maintenance and a better deal for the crew. Yes he failed with the valve gear but the body was designed so that it could be cleaned in a carriage washer. I don't think he was over concerned with streamlining as such. He was well aware of it having been Gresley's assistant and did produce a canvas and wood mockup on a Schools loco (now that was ugly). Personally, having grown up with them I find his pacifics pleasing in shape.

I personally find the Bulleid 'Pacifics' not ugly, but still not attractive. The Schools class, now to me that's attractive.

That awful Class 70 looks horrible from every angle, seriously, did the designers make their prototype out of Lego?
Oh and jadebullet, UK locos are actually easier to maintain as they have less components. Plus, most of them lasted a good deal longer than their US counterparts. N&W J1 #611 was built in 1950 and withdrawn from revenue earning service in 1959. LNER Peppercorn A2 #60528 'Tudor Minstrel' was built in 1948 and lasted through to 1966. Some 'Austerity' 0-6-0T tank engines (which were built in the early 40's) were still in revenue service with private operators in the 80's.
