ts 12 Issue #3 , levels.

What does the program mean when it says it can't place a train because the selected layer is above track level? Once I put a train down, I get that message if I try to put another train down. What does it mean by levels, and what do I do when I get that message?

It took a bit of experimenting but I think I have been able to reproduce the error message. See image below ..

LayerError01.jpg

This was, in the end, a fairly easy error to produce and even easier to fix. It occurred when I attempted to place a consist asset on a section of track. The track was created in the layer named "route-layer" and the wagon was being placed while the layer named "TestR2" was the active or selected layer.

If you open the Layer tool you will see the names of the layers, their types (Route or Session) and the layer hierarchy. The image shown below is for my particular experiment to recreate this problem.

LayerError02.jpg

The currently active layer, "TestR2", is above the "route-layer" in the hierarchy so I cannot be in that layer and place a consist on a track that belongs to a lower layer. If however, "TestR1" or "TestS1" were the active layers then there would be no problems.

Solution: There are at least two simple solutions to this problem.
  • Use the mouse to drag the "TestR2" layer to a new position in the hierarchy below the "route-layer".
  • Select a layer below the "route-layer" (any one will do) as the new active layer.
Hope this helps

PS: Layers have been a major source of heated threads and posts in these forums. Personally, I love them and really cannot see how I managed to do anything serious in Trainz in the versions before 2009 when they appeared. Others will disagree but it really is a matter of "knowing your enemy" to be able to get the best out of using them.
