TRS22 keeps crashing for me

Hey everyone, I'm playing Trainz 22 on a Lenovo Thinkpad and for the most part it is operating very well with no lagging until it freezes suddenly. When I try to go into fullscreen or out of full screen, the game crashes and doesn't display an error message.
I've set the details (texture, shadow, water, etc) on low, scenery detail at clutter only, and antialiasing at 4x. I turned off PhySX simulation and allowed processing objects behind camera. Is there something with my computer? I got this thing for Christmas and the computer is very new, but the game keeps crashing. My previous computer supported TANE but was laggy for TRS19 and 22. For this computer, it sort of supports TRS19 and 22, but freezes frequently and then crashes.

Hi,
I suspect that the thinkpad may be “throttling down” its performance for heat problems…
My desktop pc (i5 @ 4.3 GHz, Rtx 2060 gpu) regularly runs with the cpu at 65C and gpu at 70C. Laptops generally run hotter (less cooling capability) and may go into self-preservation mode..

I think you are correct,

Several things, unfortunately for us, our GPU is hard wired (soldered in place)

Additionally, 15 Gigs of RAM is marginal, if you can add more, like to 32 Ram would be great.,

And when running your Trainz, try to go into Airplane Mode, especially close any backup programs, email, anything else running..

You might want to reboot fresh, that way everything is closed out...

Windows and other programs have a nasty habit of keeping programs you've closed, running in Standby Mode, using your Ram.

Bring up your Task manager by using Ctrl Alt Delete function, see exactly what it shows, you'll be amazed how much stuff is running.

I don't want to get to deep in the Woods here with Geeky stuff.

Also make sure you have Fan Board cooling try for your Laptop, in my opinion an absolute must for cooler GPU.

What you are fighting is Classic GPU overheat within a very confined space, Laptop.

Hope this helps,

Your CPU in your device maybe too slow for the TRS22 product.
Best to check on the system requirements on the Trainz support pages.

I found this info in TRAINZ Knowledgebase Helpdesk page:

PC

Minimum:

OS: Windows 8 64bit, Windows 10 64bit, Windows 11 64bit
CPU: Intel I/AMD K10 Series 3GHz 64Bit Processor
GPU: NVidia GT 430 or ATI 5550 or better, at least 1GB dedicated VRAM supporting DirectX 11
Memory: 8GB
Hard Drive: 40GB free space
Requires an internet connection for initial authorisation and additional online services.

MAC

Minimum:

OS: MacOS X 13 or higher (recommended - Latest MacOSX)
CPU: Intel i5 3Ghz (Recommended - M1)
GPU: Metal-supporting GPU
Memory: 8GB
Hard Drive: 40GB Free Space
Requires an internet connection for initial authorization and additional online services.

Device name Jaykobs-PC
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 5 125U 1.30 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.5 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

WARNING: Edit your original post to remove the following information "Product ID" and "Device ID" never post this information about your computer, it's like giving away your personal information such as your full name, DOB, address, credit card, banking details and more.

Quick question, what is your graphics card specification? NVIDIA or AMD?? I searched for Lenovo Thinkpad, but it doesn't give me much to work with
Your processor is not compatible with Trainz to the best of my knowledge, it's very low-spec but the look of it!

My processor for an example: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz

The processor is of the latest Intel architechture, the Ultra series is the successor to the i series processor. This particular CPU has 12 cores (8 performance cores) and runs to a maximum of 4.3Ghz.
The GPU is the most important item to worry about and due to having 15.5GB usable it would seem to have a graphics chip with its own memory, but the type of GPU is not mentioned. It is also possible for it to be Intel Iris XE graphics which will dynamically allocate RAM as graphics memory thereby starving applications of memory.

Since the computer runs then freezes, my concern is heat. Trainz will push the hardware pretty hard and this is even more true with TRS22 because that really works the GPU harder than any other Trainz version. Even on my Alienware 18 laptop, which is meant for gaming, I can feel the heat on my hands being pushed out of the vents on the sides and on the keyboard which sits on top of the GPU and its peripheral components when I use Trainz Plus.

I recommend getting a laptop cooler. These can be found at office supply stores such as Staples or online from Amazon and other resellers. They're not very expensive and are worth the investment.

But I don't feel my computer heating at all. When I play Trainz, it works well. 60 fps-ish until a sudden freeze and then a crash.

It could be heat doing this. It happens over time due to weak and heat-sensitive components. They will work fine to start with until they are put under load and in a warmer than normal environment, not always one you can feel, will cause the component to fail. A cold solder joint is a classic example of this and this is a bigger issue with surface mounted components. RAM, meaning DIMM memory, has this issue all the time and this can be difficult to find.

From a Trainz standpoint, this can be caused by corrupted assets, sounds, and faulty scripts. Does this occur only with a particular route in a particular spot?

I had this with a faulty Speed Tree back in TS12. On one route with tons of trees, TS12 would come to a complete stop if I looked in a certain direction and would sometimes crash to the desktop. If I looked the other way, everything ran fine. Hunting for the faulty asset in Surveyor proved impossible because as soon as I got in the vicinity, I would be facing the desktop and have to run a database rebuild.

I finally found the bad maple tree when I was converting the route from TS12 to T:ANE and had to replace the old Speed Trees.

Before you start doing other troubleshooting such as deleting assets and wasting a ton of time, I recommend running some system diagnostics provided by your hardware manufacturer. Some manufacturers such as Lenovo offer stress tests for their hardware. Check their website for more information.
