TRS2010

Ok, this is a stupid questions but will Trainz sometime get more of an automatic mode for creating trains?

What I mean is that if you want to drive a layout now, you either have to build a session yourself or download a session. Couldn't you simply place the waggons and locomotives on the layout and then have Trainz build the trains consists and put drivers in them and give them destinations? A built out function of the industry/waybill function.
This would make Trainz easier to use if you don't have to build all trains and put destinations on them if you don't want to drive alone on the layout. It would give the layouts much more life and feel more realistic. A real train driver never plans the train movements - he simply drives where they tell him to drive.
In Trainz, you are the "they" that tells the drivers where to go and what to do.

If you don't want to do anything specific you can always just get in the cab and drive, as simple as that, no way bills, no destinations.

Remember Trainz is not a game where everything is done for you, it is a world where you have to do some work to make things happen or get someone else's work, i.e. session and use that.

Hi, when this is the future to bring every time a new version on the market while still TRS2009 has some problems then i real y have my own thoughts. I mean TRS2009 is still not 100%. Whats wrong with you Auran. Plz dont get me wrong but why not go on with TRS2009 first and make some good add-ons for that version and improve that version.I have alot good content that even don,t work with TRS2009. I just don,t get it why bring a new version of Trainz when the old version is not done yet. Its not possible with all the versions we have now to make something for the community anymore. Plz Auran think about that.
TRS2006,TRS2007,TRS2008,TRS2009, PTP, TC, TC2,TC3in just a couple of years. Its a mess that even scare many new members to the Trainz scene.
I realy understand the step from TRS2004 to TRS2006 and TRS2009. But this is getting out of hand. Sorry i don,t want to harm anyone but that just my thought.

I must voice my disapproval at something. Sorry folks, I know we're sick of people whinging.:hehe:

The USA and UK are always looked after very nicely, always new content for those two regions. The company that creates the product is based in Australia. I understand that Auran need to target larger areas for profits. but us Aussies are being left in the dark yet again.

There is enough UK and USA content on the DLS, to find any Australian content is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
And what about the rest of the world's areas with major rail traditions? I guess some of those creators will just have to work harder :p

I know this, but that is what I would like to have changed. Today the entry point for Trainz is a bit high - you can only play a bit before you need to learn how to build sessions etc. Having the option of having Trainz generate these for you would make the application easier to use and in my opinion funnier also.

I hate to have to tell you this but that is exactly why many people got into Trainz in the first place.

It's a place to build a world. Some worlds are already built and you only have to make this happen. Cab mode lets you drive just like the real thing. As a concession, DCC was added but thats almost heretical to some :hehe:

Some people even have built and shared their worlds and sessions on the DLS so there is one place you can find what you are looking for.

If you still want Trainz to do all the work for you, I'm afraid you're at the wrong station. :o

That sounds as if you want scripted activities, in the style of TRS2004 scenarios. Have you given our material a try?

I have another question. Are there going to be any new locomotives or rolling stock, or is that rusty, yet somehow shiney, out of dimension SD40 that someone outside of Auran made going to be it, because quite frankly, I am not impressed by it one bit, just as I am not impressed with the wimpy route list. (I was expecting new routes that were of new high quality rather than polished old routes. Seriously, I can download those routes right now and say that I have TS10 without the speed tree and layering.)

By the way, are you going to ever fix TS09, or is it just going to be abandoned on the side of the road like the dog you couldn't house train?

Sorry if I sound cynical, but this exition of TRS doesn't really seem to have anything that I really wanted, or expected in it. Just trees.

Okay, one final answer, and this is something that could make me buy it right off the bat anyway. Have you fixed the water so that you don't have to create stupid little waterfalls just to adjust the water height?

Plz Auran think about that.

Which is why I previously suggested (I think) that Auran could look at including the updated S&C content within TS2010 or bundled with the DVD version. That would then make TS2010 a truly level playing field for players and content developers alike. Yes it means they probably won't sell many copies of S&C as a standalone pack for TS2009 as originally intended but to some extent that marketing initiative has been overtaken. An all new version of Trainz with everything gathered together would be a most attractive product!

I would like to thank Chris for taking the time to answer many questions here on the forum. I'm happy that developing work on Trainz is continuing. Sure, other train-sims can do certain things better - but as a whole - Trainz is the leading product on the market. Versatile and very userfriendly.

In threads like this one, we always get some people with very specific requests of improvement, often just a single one, and they get very angry if it's not implemented in the next version. The flaming takes on... Sadly we're not hearing all the satisfied customers, who has to be hundreds of thousands.

People feel cheated of having bought one version and quickly the next one is to be launched. Try to see it as a donation. Without new money, there will be no development. In the end - it's only money...

"Some weeks ago I got myself a bottle of single malt whisky for some $30. Every now and then I had a glas or two. Today the bottle is empty and my $30 are gone. Was I fooled ?? "

(Still got my Trainz DVD's)

For the most part, I enjoy my Trainz experience each and every time I sit down at my computer for a session. And your suggestion of looking at my purchase as a donation is valid. Generally, everything in life, software included, is a learning experience. From a team of programmers developing a product, to the users at large enjoying that product. What is not valid is the malt whiskey comparison. I don't drink alcohol, but I know enough about whiskey to know that anyone who enjoys a drink now and then, gets exactly what was expected when they make that $30 purchase, and doesn't need to wonder if the next "version" will be to his or her liking or not. Or even taste like the last bottle they enjoyed.

I have only purchased TS2009. And I consider my donation money well spent. I have in a short time spent many hours enjoying my new hobby. But within one month from the time I chose to donate to Trainz, I see a new version is in the works to be released. And in that same month, I have had to wade through thousands and thousands of "assets" to find a limited few items that meet my narrow field of interest. I didn't just open the Trainz package and sip the warm liquid a $30 bottle of malt whiskey provides. It has taken time to learn how to enjoy Trainz, and it has taken patience to overlook all the content I basically have no interest in. Now I am wondering, will I need to contribute another donation to enjoy what I already purchased a month ago? And will TS2010 provide what I thought I was purchasing one month ago?

What I would like to see in lieu of the current method of packaging the game, is that all content, except for perhaps a hundred or so "basic" items, be in a separate directory or download file that a new user can access at their own choice and not have all this content included by default. I would rather choose assets to be in my version of the database or collection of content than have to page through page after page of content in the Content Manager and Disable thousands and thousands of items I will never use. This is a waste of my time and detracts from my level of enjoying what I donated to.

A lot of this built-in content does not even have a preview image or any description at all. And many assets don't even have a name that is self-explanatory. I know this is the fault (?) of third-party content creators, not Auran. But nonetheless, this content is included in what I donated to and I am not pleased about it. It detracts from my enjoyment to know that all of this content is there and is slowing down my experience of Trainz. I have read posts in this Forum that adding more content slows down the overall time it takes to load the application. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, but I do know it is there and I have to filter out all of that content I don't need or want to find what few items I do enjoy.

As to filtering out content I don't wish to have in my asset database... when I am in Content Manager and using the Search parameter feature, sometimes I forget that while the focus of my input is in the Search fields, when I press the delete key to remove a typo, Content Manager will assume I mean to delete the currently selected asset, even though my attention is on the search fields and what I am typing there, and delete the selected asset. To me this is a bug and should be fixed. If the focus is on the list of assets and I press the delete key, then I would expect Content Manager to delete that asset, but NOT while I am typing in parameters to filter the long, long, long list of assets I would rather not have in that list. 170,000+ assets and I only use less than two hundred? Granted, many thousands are in the Download Station, but still, there are thousands and thousands of built-in assets I will never use.

Auran, please consider packaging the thousands and thousands of assets now included as built-in assets into a separate file to be added later by the user. Or provide two download versions, one as packaged now with built-in content, and another version with a minimum set of assets needed by the tutorials provided, and let me, a new user, add content in my area of interest.

Then I can view my $30 donation as getting what I expected, as Ferngren suggested in the above comparison to a bottle of fine malt whiskey. And sit back and enjoy an evening of excellent Trainz fun.

I hear and understand your frustration when you open Trainz and have to wade through and disable thousands of items that don't interest you just to use the few that do.

I'm sure that as soon as they include the missing AI module with CM2 it will know exactly what you need. Then you'll only see the few objects you want. Of course you'll have a difficult time running almost every route except your own because route creators tend to use a wide variety of objects even if they are not strictly prototypical for the location. But I'm sure the AI will realize this and quickly put back those items when the route is running and disable them again when it is finished. so that your Trainz experience will not be impacted. ;)

Until then that day, you'll have to do some work. And being an international program, I think you'll have a hard time convincing others that they have to change their object names for your benefit. The simple solution is to disable anything you don't understand. You might miss out on some superb objects but them's the breaks.

International program or not, Untitled is not a very descriptive user-friendly name for any asset in any language. Thankfully, there are only 27 Untitiled assets included with my version of Trainz. I also find assets with names like Building Big and Building Factory to be rather ambigious and uninformative, especially when there is no description or preview image included. Or abri. This one is under Buidlings, but without a description or preview image, how does one know what abri is in any language? Is Abri a hotel? A building for the Animal Behavior Resources Institute? A barracks for the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia?

I can appreciate the fact that Content Creators spend hours creating content that we get to use, mostly for free. Thank you Content Creators. It just puzzles me that someone can take the time to create an asset, and submit it for general download, while omitting a description and preview image. Albeit freeware, marketing your assets still applies. If a Content Creator can't be bothered with marketing his/her products, who will take them seriously? I for one won't take the time to write to a Content Creator thanking them for creating and making available their items if they can't be bothered to market what they spend time creating. And unless I determine that the item is useful, I won't use it either. An asset that has a proper name along with a preview image and a description will get my attention everytime ahead of any nameless or poorly or non- described asset.

If Auran had chosen to provide an initial list of content that did NOT include all of this (where are the standards for Content Creators?) I wouldn't be venting my view on this subject. But as it is, my list of assets includes all of this useless, unidentifiable content that I have to dig through to find assets I can actually use. That's the breaks for trusting Auran to provide a quality experience as advertised.

You have highlighted what has been a big problem ever since TRS2006 and probably the main reason why I went back to, and stayed with, TRS2004. That's why I'm interested in this statement from the TS2010 page;

"Customizable Menu System
The Trainz interface has had a thorough overhaul, bringing a more friendly and intuitive interface to your screens. Along with the usability improvements, content creators can also create their own menu items for their routes and sessions. "

Can some one official expand on exactly what this means in terms of how the available content is listed in Surveyor? Will we finally be given control over how the built-in stuff is named and categorized, at least in terms of how it looks to the user in Surveyor?

coRioGrandeSouthern,
while I agree that the content naming is a mess I have to disagree with this, "That's the breaks for trusting Auran to provide a quality experience as advertised.", Auran advertise that there are thousands of items available to download, nowhere do they say they are organized in any particular order or that they are named in a particular manner.
While 'Building1234' is not very descriptive the only way to give an object an original name is to know the name of every building on the DLS, so in the end you would have this type of progression just for a 2 story brick building

brick building 2 story
brick building 2 story red (and so on through all the brick colours)
brick building 2 story (repeat for each colour) with brick chimney

After a couple of hundred 2 story brick buildings you end up with,

brick building, 2 story, brown, 1 chimney 3 pots, blue windows, white door, slate roof

and that is just for 2 story brick buildings, throw in weather board - cement sheeting - stucco etc and it would be a nightmare to describe the building in just a few words, after all you can only read a few words in surveyor.
I find it easier to just place it in surveyor and have a look :)

There being no object image is another matter, for me no image, no download, easy :D

Cheers David

i dont think we are after anything as complicated as that but a simple structure such as buildings, trees, track,so forth.

Probably the biggest offenders for nomenclature are the Protrain items included with the German route from TRS2006 onward. Descriptions like PTZ546 (that's just made up, not the real one) tell you nothing and even if you follow through the number series, not necessarily the same type of item. 546 might be a house, while 545 is a billboard and 547 a platform waiting shelter!

In regards to your brick building example... Not necessarily. If one were proud of what they create and care about the prototype being modeled, one might consider... Silver Plume Brick Building... Gilpin Station circa 1895, etc. But that's just me, what do I know?

I have tried looking at assets in Surveyor. But my point is, if there is a facility for creators to name their assets and provide a description, why is it so difficult for that information to be provided when creating the asset itself takes longer than the time to type an appropriate name and description?

I know, I am asking for a perfect world and that just isn't reality. I just wish Auran could have provided only a few representative assets in the release and let us (the users who pay for the application) decide what we will download to our computers. Spending hours and hours perusing the thousands of assets provided by default is not fun. I bought Trainz to, well, play with virtual trains, not strain my eyes searching for assets I enjoy seeing being pulled by a locomotive I like.

The only way to have a neat download station is for Auran to start a new database with 09 native mode as the starting point, and make sure that the description and image really describe the content.
I am not saying get rid of the present download station, that should be left as is, up to 09 in compatible mode :)
So we would have two parts to the dls, the messy present part and a neat 09 native and up :D

Cheers David
