Transfer of rule data between existing sessions

Entering the data for some session rules can take many hours. If there are multiple sessions for a route using the same data for the same rules, then copying and editing the first-created session to create new sessions can save a lot of time re-entering the data for subsequent sessions.

But where multiple sessions already exist with rule data that is significantly different beween sessions and you want to add new data to a rule that is similar for each session, then the copying of an updated session to introduce the new rule data to the other sessions is not a viable option.

Is there a way to copy the data pertaining to just the updated rule from one existing session to another session belonging to the same route?

I agree with you on the time for setting up the sessions. I wondered too if there is a way to save them and copy the rules into another session, or at least back up the rules in case the session crashes so that they can be easily reinstalled again.

On backing up a session's rules

John, isn't backing-up a session's rules achieved by saving the session to CDP or archiving it?
If so, the outstanding issue remains how to transfer a rule's data from a source session to a target session while maintaining the data of other rules in the target session.

Leigh,

I backup the sessions no problem, but I agree the real problem lies with being able to copy the rules between sessions. In some cases a new sessions is based on a previous one so this becomes a pain in the ***. It would be nice to be able to copy rules-sets seperate from the sessions.

The other thing too while I think of it, it would be nice to make some of the rules permenant with the route instead of sessions-based. Diamond crossing rules, for example are sessions-based so if there are a ton of crossings and double-slips, it's necessary to reprogram the rules again when creating a new session. This also becomes an issue if the route is copied up to the DLS without a session.

Leigh,

No existing version of Trainz can copy rules from one session file to another session file. There has been talk of an external session editor as a future addon to a future version of Trainz. Auran has not committed to it but did say it might be a good thing to have. Think of a special purpose text editor with the ability to load and save session files. If it happens it will be after the release of TRS2009.

I had tried to search for threads on this topic, but failed.

William, you inform this has been discussed and a possible resolution in the future has been mooted by Auran. Is the discussion recorded in this or another forum? If so, do you have a link to this discussion?
