Trainz is not realistic.

On the topic of realistic sims, there is also Open Rails, which lets you run easily most of the content and expansions for Microsoft train simulator, and there was a more complex version of Trainz released in the form of the Protrain Perfect and Protrain Perfect 2, though these are largely German routes and trains - like Zusi3.

Zusi 3 I have tried to play and I like it and it's difficulty but elements still trip me up , like how one simply can elect to drive a train - I had to wait hours in one scenario before the train I was allowed to drive actually showed up on the route

I haven't tried Zusi 3 yet (too expensive for my taste) but in Zusi 2 you could fast forward with F11 (I think) to your train start time.

yeah - i think i later learnt to do that, - found the fast forward key then when i did get to drive the piece of track i was on seemed to only be like a couple of kms and in a straight line, - i am sure there are better routes in the game, i was just unlucky and too unfamiliar with it then. whats hard about zusi3 also is that last time i played it, there are not onscreen descriptions of the buttons and levers, which made things quite dire for someone like myself who likes to just dive in a try things
