Trainz is going mulitplayer? Awesome! But I have one concern...

The problem is that there are lots of amazing routes using non DLS kuids, and of course you will not see all the content creators will upload those hundred of kuids to DLS so we can play multiplayer.

Call it "power", call it "poor DLS", call it whatever yout want. They are forcing us to have a very limited multiplayer so I really don't see the point of discussing why content creators don't want to use DLS instead of asking Auran what kind of politic is keep aside all the content creators who have been "feeding" Trainz with lots of kuids all over this years.

I agree. I supose I said the same ideas with other words.

We're not forcing anybody to do anything. We are providing a new way of playing Trainz, and making sure that the users of this system have the best possible experience.

When we release Trainz Multiplayer, try it out and see what you think. If you don't like it, nobody is forcing you to play.

chris

Say this kind of things and you will only obtain that the people stop using trainz. I want to rembember you that we are that use Trainz, as consumers of this product, without us Trainz is nothing.
This is simple, if another company makes another simulator online that allows to use all the third-party objects, Trainz will be left...

We love this game, and we want that this kind of improvements are for what we all expect from it... :(

Forcing people into playing something that they don't want is a good way to get people to go away. Giving people the choice means that they won't play things that they don't like, but they will play the things that they do like. We are providing that choice.

We all want to eat our cake and to keep it too. Don't get me wrong- i'm all for making this the best product that we can. But you must admit, it's a far better option to have multiplayer with restrictions on the asset set, than no multiplayer.

It's not practical for us to provide multiplayer without asset restrictions, so we provide the next best thing.

For some people, this might be a show-stopper - and that's fine, you're free to wait it out and either stick with single-player or join us later. We're even offering a public beta so that people can make up their own minds as to whether they're "in" or "out".

If we came out and said "from now on, all content comes from the download station" then I would expect a negative reaction. But saying "we've added this cool new feature" without removing anything from the existing gameplay- you can play or not as you see fit, but you don't really have much reason to complain. :)

kind regards,

chris

Wow... This thread seems to be made to prove me right when I said that people start complaining even before they see what they are complaining about.

It is obvious to anyone who have anything close to average to think with, that allowing any content to be used in multiplayer, and still expecting it to work, is hopeless. Most games that offer multiplayer, accept NO custom content to be used in multiplayer, Trainz actually allows you to use any content you like, the only requirement is that you upload it to DLS. I can't possibly see how that should be a reason not to upload stuff to DLS. People really need to stop assuming that anything Auran do, is done to harm us users of trainz.

I can't possibly see how that should be a reason not to upload stuff to DLS.

As I said, most of the routes are using lots of external kuids, so it doesn't matter that there will be more people using DLS, because we need all kuids to be on DLS, and that will not happen.

Yeah, I can understand that even with this restrictions multiplayer is a big improvement, but for me, who always dreamed of an online seasion on my own routes, this will be like another built-in stuff that I will almost never use.

I'm not among those people who think Auran just wants to "harm" users, but I think that its not wise to ignore that the real Trainz community is not on DLS, its out there, and thats what keeps Trainz alive.

Regards.

well with all things, this new programing will surely grow with leaps and bounds. Im confident that we'll soon see a version that can accept more content and route created by our own hand. Perhapps working through a system of checks that monitors content's presence in the local file. Regardless, this is still a huge step up, and seeing the constant improvements that have been made so far to this series, I expect to see great things in the future with this installment. Happy beta-ing.

@windwalkr, have a nice day

cheers

STR dudes

To the guys at STR --

First off I really appreciate the content you have provided - it's all excellent.

My take on this is that the Mutiplay Beta is actually a "proof of concept" to:
a) Prove that multiplay actually does work.
b) Demonstrate that interactive and cooperative play can be tremendously enjoyable.
c) For those that find that they do enjoy multiplay - to purchase the final release.

With this in mind I have no issues with the restrictions that have been placed on the beta.

Perhaps with the final release, though, the restrictions should be relaxed with a warning something like:

"This is intended to work with built-it assets and assets from the DLS. It may work with other content provided each player has identical content installed for the route and session being used. Failure to do this may result in unpredictable play."
Now if this eventuates, what it really means is that all the assets for a route and session will need to be accessible to all players - none of this "Sorry but we expect you to search to the far corners of the Universe for that one missing asset, thank you."

You might thus need to provide a downloadable zip file containing all the non-built-in non-DLS assets, either on your site or some hosting site like RapidShare.

Actually, even without Multiplay I wish that I could just go to one location to download all the missing dependences for many of the routes currently on the DLS and elsewhere. I detest fishing around in some Eastern European sites.

Phil

I detest to fish around in order to get the missing kuids. Who like it?

I rather prefer to see a change on auran rules about thid-party objects when they are uploaded on DLS.
The author should maintain in the original. If auran change this rule, I'm sure that the 3D / Trainz designers will upload more and more objects.

The author always maintains copyright ownership of the original material. The requirement for uploading content to the DLS is that the author grants us a (non-exclusive) redistribution license.

(I'm not a lawyer; this is not legal advice; etc.)

I've stayed away from this post for many reasons, but a few comments I'd like to share.
  • To make this successful, Auran needs only to allow this feature on Built-In Routes. I feel it will resolve many issues from content use in a route to maybe one does not have the route and has to download at non first class ticket speeds
  • I read a Beta will be for TS2010. I then expect a Full TS2010 Upgrade
  • Respectfully, the CUDA Issue needs to be resolved for TS2010 before such a new highly demanded feature is added.
  • The alteration to the Non-Exclusive Redistribution policy is a great suggestion Auran. Allow us content providers an option to place a signature thru selection for content to NOT be redistributed. This option and with a background signature for your records will infact bring content providers back to the DLS.
  • Complaints without any formal use of a new feature I feel is unwarranted. Auran is giving you a desired feature, they have to incorporate their business model into it, and it is just like having 100 pairs of high heels (not many on the forum I hope as there are very few female Trainz Enthusiasts) whereas you have options but not always wearing every pair.

There is no CUDA issue in TS2010 that I'm aware of? It's the users's choice whether to use CUDA or not. If you elect to do so, texture compression will be faster, but you run the risk of texture corruption if your video drivers have bugs. Was there something more to your point that I'm missing?
