Trainz and windows 8

Hi:

Maybe there is already a post on the topic of Windows 8 and T12 but I could not find it in a search. Roy Joosten's amazing Canadian Pacific Railways route basically is very slow on my laptop so I am considering upgrading to a Gaming Desktop. All the current ones that I am looking at come bundled with Windows 8. Can anyone tell me how T12 works on Windows 8?

Cheers,

Derek

There isn't any major PC manufacture that I know of that will force you to take Windows 8. Just insist on Windows 7, I know Dell and Lenova do that for sure, because my daughter just bought a new top of the line Lenova and they put Windows 7 on it, which the dealer recommended by the way.

I put Windows 8 on a separate partition on my desktop and TS12 does indeed run on it.

BUT...

It is not as fast as TS12 on my Windows 7 partition. The frame rates are about 12% lower on Windows 8 in both OpenGL and DirectX modes.

I would say that your hardware better be very high-end to get acceptable results out of TS12 on Windows 8. It's not Auran/N3V's fault. Windows 8 was made more for tablet PCs than a gaming environment I think.

Andrew

WIN 8 x64 than not x32

Andrew be careful not to jump to conclusions when not fully tested and tuned and tweaked. It would for me be the first time that win would go slower when upgrading.... and 12% seems a lot thinking immediately did you install this on a SSD probably not just a regular 32mb cash sata similar. Just before you post make sure the informations is accurate enough not to send people into the forest for no reason how well meant.
I will buy the weekend win8 when in Bangkok and put it on my crashed SSD by the thais btw not the drive itself. The ssd is not damaged only waiting for a new win version english one this time.
Before having my own conclusions yes it is safer for regular users to stick with WIN7 x64 which runs well and reliable. As ssoon as we know more about WIN8 if it took a dive or better made it to trainz world one can consider changing anytime no time lost only won.

my two bath into this discussion. Depending on the budget there are very good configs on the market that will do the job but make sure you have 6gb ram quad or better nvidia GTX680 and SSD 128gb or better one for WIN8 and for Trainz SSD 248gb or better and of course a good monitor I use zalman big one with stereo 3D for the spoiled and bet it drives you nuts full 3D trainz on the Rocky Mountains!!! What I forgot??

regards

Hi Everyone:

Thanks for all of the feedback. To be honest I didn't want to try to learn the new Windows 8 interface. You have all convinced me to make sure that they install Windows 7 onto a new system.

Cheers,

Derek

PS: Hey Roy, like the proverbial "two ships in the night" my post missed yours. Thanks for the update on the specs of your computer. I have been intending to upgrade to a "gaming" computer sometime and your excellent route is giving me more incentive. I have found that the routes such as Mojave desert and The coal run stutter somewhat.

Cheers for the post,

Derek

Very true, Roy. To clarify - I did no tuning nor tweaking to my installation of Windows 8. It's Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. It's a vanilla install, probably using the core Microsoft drivers for my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti. My hard drive is 2TB, 500 GB dedicated to Win8, the other details I'm unsure of (I'm more of a software than hardware guy).
