Trainz and 4GB of RAM?

I am running Trainz 2006 and 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate Edition on a custom-built PC. I am currently running 2 gigs of RAM, and Trainz seems to lag in route areas with higher detail. How much of a Trainz performance increase, if any, could I expect with an extra 2GB of ram, making a total of 4GB?

Thanks.

Not unless you've got Vista x64. 32 bit os can only recognize 3 gigabytes. I'd look into faster hard drives and/or graphics with more juice.

It's been my experience that the greatest single improvement to increase Trainz frame rates has been to throw more RAM at it. I would therefore expect a noticeable improvement.

Trainz can use a maximum of 2 gigs unless you modify it. Your operating system likes about 512 mb - 1 gig so 3 gigs of memory would give you the optimum performance if its i7 core triple channel if its dual channel then you need to keep the dual channel working so take that into account.

Holy crap is Vista ever a resource hog! It's a shame because I like how the Vista OS looks - but then again, I like Windows 7 even better, lol!

Ubuntu 64bit, around 300meg with firefox running :)

Windows uses brute force over tight programming :D

Windows XP 32bit with Opera and Firefox running, around 200MB... ;)

You have to remember that there is more than just the current applications running along with the operating system shell (interface). Under the hood of the OS, are different tasks that are happening concurently with the applications, and other background utilities such as antivirus/antimalware, firewall, and hardware drivers.

Up until a few weeks ago, I was running TRS2006 and TS2009 under Vista Ultimate 64-bit. The system has 4GB of RAM. The performance was better than it was wth 2GB.

Of the two version of Trainz, TS2009 ran the best.

Now I'm running Windows 7 RC1 Beta on the same machine with current W7 video drivers, and the performance of TS2009 is quite spiffy even in vompatibility mode.

My Vista 64 uses 1.3 GB of ram with just the desktop running, so 4 GB will run Trainz better.

Vista uses RAM in a diferent way to XP so don't worry about the 1.3 gig figure! Google "vista ram usage" for more info.

As a general rule the more RAM the better.

Windows 7 gets very good reviews.

I think you would need to tell us abit more about your rig than just the amount of memory
However to load on your system from a 64 bit OS is more than a 32 bit OS so more memory will help as your 64 bit os is really designed to run with 4 or more gigs..
And you only have 2

Why are your running a 64 bit os on 2 gigs of ram seams wrong choice of os to me

2 is about sufficient, and there is no guideline for x64 OSes that there should be more than 2. My old 9800GT is capable of running Trainz at 1280x760 on maximum settings. Current HD4850 can handle max settings and 1680x1050 and it's quite cheap also, both are worth looking into if you want a new gfx FLWBStrainsman. :) On the other hand, memory nowadays are dirt cheap as well...

I had this system custom built. My cousin, who built it for me, recommended Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and I accepted. He said nothing about 2 GB being the bare minimum for said system, and I didn't know about it. There are 2 slots for other memory sticks, though.

Did you mention to him that Trainz likes 2 gigs of memory purely dedicated to Trainz? 2 gigs of memory total is often enough for many applications but not the best for Trainz.

I'm not certain what special requirement you have that would require Vista Ultimate 64-bit rather than a more normal 64 bit version of Vista.
