AMD 7900XT/9800x3d vs 6800XT/5700x with Trainz

Hello all,

I am considering upgrading to a new custom PC and am hoping to get a little insight. My current build uses an AMD Radeon RX 6800xt with a Ryzen 7 5700x, running at 1080p. I typically cap Trainz 22 at 30 FPS, with mixed performance. Some routes hit 30 FPS easily with most settings fairly high, while others struggle to hit 15 FPS in places. This is with shadows disabled. I know Trainz will take whatever hardware you throw at it, but can anybody provide any advice on what kind of performance upgrade I might see when moving to a 7900xt and 9800x3d? The new preliminary system specs are below. I haven't fully settled on this particular GPU/CPU combo, but from my research, it seems like a fairly well-balanced match. I am partial to AMD.

Windows 11 Home OEM
Ryzen 7 9800x3d
AMD Radeon RX 7900xt
32 GB RAM
MSI X870E-P Pro Wifi
4 TB SSD

I really have no interest in any resolution higher than 1080p at the moment, and I am fine with 60 FPS if that is attainable. Of all the games/simulators that I play, Trainz seems to be the most cranky when it comes to performance. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Realistically the only thing that matters is the GPU.

AMD Radeon RX 6800xt 3d score 25,050

AMD Radeon RX 7900xt 3d Score 29,035

I honestly don't think you'll see a lot of difference in performance. Because of the way that content is created you have little control over what impact it has on your system. Look for assets that have LOD to start with, content manager open preview will give you some stats on your chosen assets. There are a couple of sketchup assets on the DLS that will bring any route that uses them to it's knees. Removing them can add 20 fps to your fps score.

I think we need a thread that covers how to spot tatty assets and how to replace them.

Cheerio John
