Trainz 2009- Honest Opinion

Like most users we surely took our lumps with Trainz 2006. We prefer to not do that again with Trainz 2009. I'd like to get an honest opinion on this product.

Note....some of you are diehard Auran loyalists. I admire loyalty, however, if Auran send you do-do in a box on a new purchase, you probably gloat that at least it was the best do-do you ever smelled. I'd prefer not to receive biased opinons on this.

Others of you have hours and hours to spend, and enjoy finding problems so you have something to spend the time on. The more glitches the better. This is not my cup of tea, so prefer you not respond to this as well.

What I want to know is does the program do what it says it does, is it free from bugs and glitches, and can you just sit down have some fun without having to pull your hair out each time. You know, kinda like all other products on the market do.

Thx, Joe

I would suggest, if the budget will allow it, that you go for TS2010, it is better than TS2009.

Personally, I think each new version of Trainz over the last eight years has been an improvement over the last. I finally started to enjoy 04 when SP4 came out.
I'm not to sure whether or not I was just one of the luckier ones, but I've had an incredible run out of 06, especially since 06 SP1 came out. (still spending some time running it on a separate PC).
I waited for the first service pack for 09 to come out before I brought it from NV3. Clearly 09 is an improvement over 06, but it's not as bigger leap forward as I was hoping it would be...
TS2010 in my personal opinion is clearly a cut above the rest. Especially after installing SP3. (sure there's still a few MINOR bugs/issues that need to be sorted, but it's the most polished version of Trainz to date!!!). -*- CMP 3.3 is a big improvement over previous versions...

So my advice to you Joe is, bypass 09 and go straight to TS2010 SP3... I'm sure you won't regret it...

If you where going into a new car dealer, would you be looking to buy a brand new 08/09 car that's been sitting on the showroom floor for the last couple of years, or would you buy (for the same price) the brand new late model 2010 car that has just arrived from the assembly plant???

Cheers, Mac...

I personally think you should choose based on your computer spec's.

Both games are typical of Auran, and both have problems and always will. As Auran never test anything properly before its released.

I would only buy 2010 if you have a super fast CPU and quad core, as its this it depends on. I have learnt this the hard way. And, after a graphics card upgrade.

So i'm now back using 2009. Which works wonderful with my new graphics card.

I really like 2009, and don't get to enough problems to spoil my enjoyment.
I also find it more stable than 2010, but that also down to my PC specs.

I have TS2009 and I can't think of anything broke or really wrong. Sure, the AI is not perfect but better than any previous Trainz. It runs great on my system. (see below)

TRS2009 is the route builders edition. I enjoy building with it. However, I don't enjoy fixing broken content.:o

I prefer 09 over 10 (although I prefer TC3 over 09). Namely because my lower-end computer couldn't really handle 10. I also found 10 to be somewhat buggy; mind you I haven't had it installed since around release time so things may have changed since then. However I have had no real problems with '09. I find I'm rarely 'fixing' content (I run in combat mode, and don't care if it shows a few errors, as long as it does basically what I want it to do). That being said I think the majority of people here would suggest 10. But as I've found with most Trainz versions; everyone seems to find a different one to be best.

Haven't tried TS10 but I have TS09 and it works great for me and has since the start. I have no issues though it seems plenty of people have had.

I tried 2010 but couldn,t get on with it. My computer couldn,t handle the ECML route which is a shame, as I live 15 track miles from Peterborough, and the people who made it did a great job. Also I had problems saving in surveyor mode and I detest speedtreeze which I would just luv to do a "George Washington" on. As it is I had to be content with removing the folder. There are also some other great routes in 2010 but I decided to go back to 2009.
The other point is I find Trainz Time consuming, and at times frustrating. I,m currently editing Razorback to give it a UK feel with signals and mostly UK locos and Rolling stock. I am also improving it from an operational point of view with a lot of the mainlines being converted to double track, and a number of minor routes being used in one direction only. Newer industrys are being added such as the Cattle Feedilot and Meat Packing Plant. Portals have been added to generate freight and passenger traffic.
But really the main and almost the only problem is getting the AI drivers to do what you want to. If there is a way to go off their route they seem to find it. I keep addng more and more track and direction markers to show them the error of their ways! And how do you stop them Spadding a signal? (Signal passed at Danger). Still when everything works as I want it to it's a wonderfull feeling! Now to get off my soap box, lol.:o
