Trains Simulator 2013 or 2014?

The only thing I can tell you is that none of them are products made by the company behind this forum and I doubt the first even exists.

Right. Those products are not N3V creations. I for one have both TS12 (SP1) and those others (TS14) installed (on separate installs of Windows 7 on my dual-boot PC) and still like Trainz TS12 better. Trainz is much more intuitive than the other product you mentioned. I only wish that N3V would release a new version of TS, as it's been a while. I am curious as to what improvements we will see compared to TS12-SP1, and hopefully that won't only be 'eye candy'. I'm looking for performance and technical improvements.

Train Simulator (TS) does not have the fragmentation of users between versions that Trainz has. It's hosted on Steam and all owners of the game get updated automatically for free to the latest version. TS2014 is a fairly minor upgrade to TS2013 but it has some useful new features.

Trainsim users tend to be fiercely loyal to their favourite sim so if you are considering TS2014 best try a TS forum such as uktrainsim.com.

If you are starting fresh with the programme formerly known as Railworks (and now TS20xx) then by default a new purchase from Steam will get you the latest TS2014 version.

However as others have mentioned this programme is nothing to do with N3V and Trainz, indeed it's a serious rival (and a very good one) so you are better off going to UKTS, Trainsim.com or Railworks America to learn more about the programme.

I've been looking at TS2012, and the simulator seems to be pretty limited. It only has 3 routes, and the terrain comes pre-textured when you try to build a route. I think you can add textures, but I don't have info on that.
One feature I like is the use of Google Maps directly in the game to lay out track and terrain. It would be a fast way to lay out your favorite system, including long discontinued routes if the right of way is still visible.

I bought TS2014 off of Steam. I then bought the Horseshoe Curve route. It's not too bad. The lighting and shading are pretty good. There seems to be a lack of realistic scenery items though. I believe that this due to people being turned off by the lack of good documentation and tutorials to get items into the sim. At this time there is just too much trial and error (mostly error) getting the content into the game. Because of this and a few other reasons that I won't get into, I'm a man without a train sim. :'( I'm filling my time with Farm Simulator 2013.
