Tracking Cameras in Tunnels

Scottish

New member
When running with the consist tracking camera in operation, most of the built-in tunnels will show a tracking view through the tunnel with the camera just above the roof of the consist. However when going through dig-hole and most downloaded tunnels, the tracking camera rides up over the top of the ground above the tunnel and therefore the only way of seeing the train in the tunnel is to switch to cab view.

Is there a method of incorporating the in-tunnel tracking camera into these other tunnels.

It is very difficult but can be done using a dighole, then placing a camera, then deleting the dighole ... IDK ... I did something similar it was time consuming, as the camera sets on the height of the "Confounded Blinding Yellow Cursor" ... You can also sink the ground where the cursor lies, and set the camera below ground, or above ground ...when you delete the dighole or flatten the plateau, the camera stays there.

Good Evening Scottish
This is a side-effect of the 'kit built' tunnel system, which uses regular track rather than being an actual 'tunnel' spline object. In TC3 we implemented a 'istunnel' option for regular tracks, which will act line a regular spline tunnel (minus the limitation of 'snapping' to the grid). There are a few tracks that use this, an example being my VR BG Wood Tunnel and VR SG Wood Tunnel track assets on the DLS (under my S301 username). There are also some UK tracks from memory (Bloodnok's track in the S&C/TC3 pack is another example of this).

Thank you cascaderailroad and Zec for responding.

I agree your method of putting a normal tracking camera in the tunnel is a lot of work to set it at the correct level. I took an easier way by putting a static camera looking into the tunnel entrance and exit, however this does not give the effect of having the camera on the roof of the consist as it goes through the tunnel.

@Zec
Thanks Zec, I have downloaded your VR SG Wood Tunnel and this is what I was looking for. It took me a little time to figure out how to use it because I could not get a standard track to connect to the spline point at the end of your track. I then discovered that I had to use a tunnel portal entrance with a pair of spline points (like Andi06's invisible stations) and connect your track to the inner spline point and the normal track beyond the tunnel to the outer point. As the consist approaches the tunnel entrance the camera automatically switches to cab view but this can be changed to the roof mounted tunnel camera by switching to tracking camera view.

Since I do not have S&C or TC3 I cannot get Bloodnok's UK track, but I am quite happy using yours since it looks great.

If I find a kit type tunnel or similar which has an attached normal track, can I just change the attached track kuid reference to you track to get the same results as using it with a tunnel with no track?

Kit type tunnels are tunnels that don't have an attached track (except on the portal objects). The portals for these types of tunnels should automatically change to match the new track. If they don't, then changing the config.txt entry for the track should work.

For 'standard' tunnels (tunnels that automatically cut the terrain, and have the track attached via the config.txt file), there should be no need to use the VR SG Wood Tunnel track as it should automatically act as a tunnel, however if it isn't (or is a 'kit' tunnel with the track and 'tunnel' in the one mesh), then you may be stuck, unless the track itself is actually reference through the config.txt file.
