This might be a great idea for a thread...Track Diagrams.

Imagine having a thread of nothing but track diagrams/plans. It could be a great resource for both prototype and fictional route builders.

Here in the UK all the old style signal boxes would have detailed track layouts of their home stations, goods yards and junctions. These signal box diagrams would usually also include gradients, ground frame points and the position and distance (in metres) of where the signals were along the line in relation to the home signal box. UK signal box diagrams are always highly detailed with as much information as possible needed by the signal box staff. Here is an example of an original L.N.E.R. signal box track diagram as was used on the former March to King's Lynn branch line here in the Cambridgeshire / Norfolk fenlands -

* The 7.8 mile March to Wisbech section ran north-eastwards and was a double track branch line with only one station in-between the two Fenland towns. Coldham is a village mid-way on the main B1101 road between Wisbech and March, and once had a station until it was closed and demolished in 1966. The 9 mile section of single track branch line from Wisbech ran eastwards across the fens to a junction with the main line Ely to King's Lynn. Three rural stations served this section of line - Emneth, Smeeth Road and Middle Drove stations.

* On this original signal box diagram used in Coldham box, ground frame points, the interlocking crossing gates and the position and distance of the semaphore signals are clearly marked out. Coldham had staggered platforms either side of the level crossing. The ''down'' platform was for trains to Wisbech East station and on to King's Lynn, and the 'up' platform for trains from King's Lynn to March. The yellow signals were the distant sempahores approaching the station and LC, and the red signals were the home / station starter semaphores.

This signal box (with its 147 lever frames) called March Whitemoor, together with March North and March West boxes controlled the triangular junction into Whitemoor yard and the Wisbech line and the GN&GEJR line to Spalding. This box closed after the GN&GEJR to Spalding line closed in 1982 and the Whitemoor Yard closed in the mid 1980s. Today there is a earth embankment here for the new Whitemoor Distribution Centre that was opened in 2004 here. There are houses behind the new large earth embankment that has been put here to cut down on the noise. All tracks bar the Wisbech line were removed when the old yard closed.

* Whitemoor Junction in the 1960s. The lines heading due straight north past the box and slightly curving to the right into the distance is the Wisbech branch, whilst the other lines curving to the left are the entrances to the 'Up' and 'Down' marshallng yards, the double track main line to Spalding and the entrance to March Locomotive depot.

* Whitemoor Junction as it is now. The yards finally closed in the early 1990s due to the loss of the Speedlink traffic and were left derelict whilst the old engine depot was demolished and replaced by a housing estate a few years ago. Today, the former yards are re-open as a Network Rail engineering stabling yards for their ballast and works trains; whilst the former Wisbech branch (singled in 1972) heading due straight north is closed and sadly overgrown.
