To n3v...SIMPLIFY the damn game

The game is a work of art no doubt...BUT...why the hell does it have to be so complicated...give me a list of industries & what they accept & produce...then let me pick what I want to deliver , drop it off & pick another load...like "American Long Haul" or "Extreme Trucker 2"...the trucker versions of TS2010...this game is designed by programmers for programmers, not for people who just want to have a little simple fun w/ a video game...how about creating a simple version the next time...you'll sell 10x as many because most people don't want to "Einstein" their way thru a game...there now I feel better...maxkurt 2321291 usmc
 
To be quite honest, its actully a very simple game, and there are many members here below 10 Years old. Its even easier to get a hold of the game, when you read the manual that explains everything. And what you explained with industries, I'm not really sure what the problem is, as, those are exactly what you can do....
 
Once you learn about Trainz its is a simple game. My advice is to read the manual and work with the program before you get mad and give up on trainz.

The problem is that the end users have extended the functionality to make it a very rich in depth simulator. However choose the right sub set and it can be as simple as you like. The alternative is to grab a small child and get them to explain it to you, they seem to have very little difficulty with it.

Because it's not a "video game". If that's what your after just uninstall now... you'll just get too frustrated in the long run. It's definitely not a off the shelf plug in play game like those for most gaming consoles.

I was a sailor, not a marine, so I didn't need "TOES GO IN FIRST" stenciled on my boots to figure out how to put them on. :hehe:

Seriously, the whole thing can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it - some engineers get loading jobs where they have to slowly move a long string of cars through a loading/unloading facility, but most haul trains from one yard to another, then it's somebody else's problem. Even with switching and way freights you pick up a loaded car from Nabisco, run across the city and shove it into the supermarket warehouse spur and uncouple - unloading the car isn't my problem, I just drive the train. Huh? Couple boxes of chocolate chips missing? Dunno, maybe the door wasn't closed all the way and they fell out, not my job. ;)

I play with interactive industries occasionally just to see what they do, but most of the sessions I set up have pre spotted cars, pull into spur A and drop off some loaded ones and pick up the empties, take the empties to B, uncouple and pick up the loaded ones to take to C, and so on. Which commodities get produced or consumed by an industry and whether or not they match what the car is configured to carry doesn't matter to me, I just drive the train.
 
I don't know what it is that is so hard about Trainz ... You can run a ready to run route with your own prefered locos and cars ... you can run a session (which requires that you download every prescribed asset) ... Or you can build your own routes.

Pretty simple to me ... of course there are errors, faults, missing dependencies, misspeellings' in config files, and errant kuids that throw a monkey wrench in the works, and non-compatable assets that won't work in TS12 ... all of these add-on's are not N3V built-in assets, and are not N3V's fault, as they are aftermarket downloaded assets that you must fix, as creators have made mistakes or similar errors in their creations.

I think the O.P. would prefer an arcade version of the game with gold coins hovering above the right track. Nothing wrong with that. He's not the first I've seen complain about the industries though.

That's not necessary. The most flexible of the interactive industries is "Multiple Industry New". This can be configured to produce and consume all the commodities that are in your Trainz folder.

If you need help configuring it, just call for help.

And when used on a route it allows for complex traffic flows, like this on "DowntownTraction":

I suspect you would be happier with Railworks - that also started as a train simulator, but the company is going in the direction of gaming rather than simulating. They have "career" type scenarios (sessions) where you get scored on how well you perform the tasks, and some scenarios that are locked so you can't play them until you get "promoted" for finishing previous career scenarios.
 
There are some of us who would like to see *more* simulation elements ad complexity in Trainz, not less!

What the OP is on about sounds a bit like Greg Lane's original concept for Boss module, which effectively was going to allow you to set up something similar to Railroad or Transport Tycoon within the overall game. Sadly Greg did a runner around 2004 and most of the grand ideas died overnight including Boss module and any sort of economic element to the game (other than the real one of selling us a new version every 2 years :wave:!

It is possible to set up a good chain of industries in a route/layout, if that's what floats your boat, but many of us are just here to drive trains or build our favourite bit of railway and don't really give much priority to interactive features.

Very well written..".TOES GO in FIRST"...1st time I heard it & I it's great...still laughing(for real)...ok ,here's what I'm going to do...someone mentioned in the replies that maybe RailWorks is more what I'm looking for so I will check out their sims & see what that's all about because I would like more of a game like sim then a creator sim where you have to put in time like on an instrument to learn it properly...I suddenly am becoming very aware of why there's this divide between Trainz & Railworks...one is for creators & the other for gamers more or less...the only problem is I need a CD-ROM version otherwise it will take me a very long time to download & I can't find one for RW...take care sniper & I still say a prayer for the survivors of the Indianapolis every now & then...kurt max usmc

I to like to drive, but i have to have a purpose while doing it...I'm just your average gamer...go thru the tutorial & then play...no forum searches, just get to the next level...so like many of you have mentioned maybe I'm not a Trainzer but a RailWorkser...but I can't find their CD-ROM to check it out...thanks for the input...kurt max

thanks for that explanation because I think you have pin pointed the problem...the only thing is I have a Toshiba satellite L505D w/ win 7 home & use a virgin broadband mobile modem which does about 100MB's per hr....so 1GB = 10+ hrs. = $25 in air time...Does RW make a CD-ROM?...take care...kurt max

WOW...very interesting...a map w/ all named industries not just ind1-ind2 etc...where did this map come from & why am I not able to locate it?...that's part of the problem...without going to forum I never would have found that map...why isn't there a "detailed map section" that i can click?...kurt max

There are DVD's, In the UK they are available from Just Trains and Amazon, so guess they are somewhere in the US as well.

What is that I said that was of the track...was it that I appreciated the 10 yr olds explanation but since we're on the net I wasn't sure if that "kid" was actually a kid because "specifically" is not a word 10 yr. olds use much less spell correctly...if you notice the post has been deleted so need I say more ?...kurt max

When I was on active duty we had a zillion jokes about seagoing bellhops, and of course they had a zillion jokes about us swab jockeys. Alas, the political correctness nazis have repealed the First Amendment, even complaining about innocuous words like "damn". I'm a moderator at another trainsim forum, and some members even report the use of "hell", "crap", and even "heck" as "profanity".

Anyway you're in for downloading however you do it - you can buy the DVD version delivered by mail / fedex / UPS whatever;

But once you install it, part of the activation process involves creating a STEAM account and updating to the latest version - which at this point is one of them overnight processes, lot of gigabytes to download. But I honestly can't think of another train simulator with any kind of rewards game type activities. I know what you're talking about tho, I've played a number of games like Privateer where you earn money for risky runs and buy weapons, shield, and engine upgrades for your spaceship, or the Silent Hunter series where you use "reknown" earned on missions to "buy" better crewman / radar / deck guns etc. Lotta fun, but not what most trainsim fans are interested in.

N3V is an Australian company, this board is run by N3V, so language rules are based off from Australian language, not American. I know from experience that there are words that us Americans use on a regular basis that we don't consider bad (for example, a word beginning with "p" that to an American means that your somewhat angry at someone/thing) but is considered a bad word in Australia.

Thanks for the update sniper, I see what the difference is now...But if RW requires a STEAM account even if I get CD-ROM then that's an abort...dealt w/ STEAM once & I'd rather wear wet socks...so w/ that said I will try & learn the ways of Trainz & see what happens...take care for now...kurt max...time for a little shore leave w/ some girly-girls
