Tim Hortons WIP

The model looks great, and there's nothing wrong with the method you used to create the night-mode sign. The only thing you need to do is create an alpha-channel for the plane, so that everything but the "Tim Hortons" text is invisable. Then it should work perfectly.

Patrick

Is there an easy way for you to explain how to do that?

Thanks

First off, it depends on what photo editing program you're using. I'm not sure I'd be able to explain the process quickly, but maybe someone else can. I'd suggest searching the net for a tutorial, as it would probably be more helpful than any guidance I could give.

You could always release the model as-is, and then go back and update it later.

I use photoshop. I remember reading a tut that talked about alpha channels so ill take a look around. You're right though I could always release it soon and then update as it gets better. One thing i noticed though, i made a parking lot proportionate to the building and when I add cars from built in stuff, they are quite bigger to fit in the parking spaces... don't know what I will do for that. I may just make the spaces bigger i guess even if it only fits a few cars in the front...

Transportfan: yes I will be making a separate sign very soon. Pretty close to my next step i think : )

The easiest way is to make a copy of the sign graphic in which the writing is pure white, and the background pure black (you can play with softer grey edges, but I'm not sure if this might cause issues in TS2009). Save it as a 256 colour bitmap (e.g. 'signalpha.bmp'), and add the line alpha=signalpha.bmp to the nightmode texture.txt file. As a more advanced step, this alpha file can be saved as an alpha channel in the .tga file itself, but I don't know how to do that in PhotoShop (I'm a PSP man myself).

Hope this helps - it's a nice piece of work -all the best,

Paul

Thanks for that info... I will be testing this out in the next few days as soon as I have a chance. Things have been busy for the past few days but will definitely get this done asap. Im excited to get this out there!!

Well that alpha bmp worked. here it is. now on to the signs. I am goin to leave the parking lot the way it is cause its proportionate to the building and when you use a car spline they fit well. I think it's the cars i tried that were oversized maybe.

Looks good - I'm glad that tip helped. I did a bit of research on car space sizes, and it turns out that Vulcan's car splines work out about right (though you may have bigger spaces in the USA).

Maybe I'll try to respace the lots and make them longer. Looking at the red car in front of the TH it looks like I should do it to make it look better I guess. Working on the sign right now. I don't think that will take too long...

she's coming good. Maybe it will be ready for upload by next week!

With Sign

Ok I've got the sign done. In all your opinions. Does it look too big? Maybe if it was up higher it wouldn't look so big,,, what do y'all think? Oh and it is a separate asset : )

The sign definately seems out of proportion. Love the Tim Hortons. I missed getting some timbits during my annual trek to Nova Scotia due to a gluten-free allergy trial.

Yeah i see that too. It sucks cause i don't know of an easy way to resize other than redo it...

oh well a project for another few days i guess.

Hi Robby,

The sign looks great but I agree: it's a bit big.

I also think the parking spaces are a bit too small. Personally speaking, I'd be content just with the sign and the building and I think without a parking lot, it can be made to fit more situations.

Anyhow, it looks great and I'm amazed at what you are creating! Keep up the great work!

Dude seeing these on a daily bases and a customer myself (:hehe: ) it looks killer. I would make a model w/ a parking lot and without, just easier for everyone. Although that is hard i know so im more or less talking to myself haha. the sign is and isn't to big. Depends on the tim hortons and where its being placed. If its near a highway or major road its perfect because people can see it. For a small rural road though it is a bit to big.

Can't wait to see this thing!

Finished redoing the sign. Night mode on board as well. Here are two pics. Proportions are much better now. Just got to get a drive through window on the building and fix parking lot...

Thinking about the comments, it's true about the parking lot though, we can always use the parking single and double splines to make it... Maybe ill take that out. If so all I have to do is remove poly's (didn't take the time for now) and upload...

A Tim Horton's finally! And here's some more Canadianna:

Now we Canucks can make realistic suburban streetscapes!

BTW: The sign is the right size, but the pole should maybe be a bit taller.

I think I made it longer than it is there so you can adjust it. Can't wait to have those Canadian gas stations in my route!!! My next project i think will be a Via Rail station! Definitely need that
