The "Good" SP1 thread

I have noticed that there are now semi-transparent red 'trigger cones' being applied to directional track markers and such. This is a good thing, but I have NOT found anywhere to turn these off, however, since working close to them is hard because of the red hue.

I did a fresh install on a new Trainz dedicated SSD.The patch downloaded in less than 15 minutes. It installed in several hours overnight without issue. I started the program this morning and my one DLC item, the Penn T1 installed without isuue. That's as far as I've gone so far. I'm debating whether to now just drop in my saved local folder and deal with it or go item by item.

The Service Pack itself installed in a sane manner and I'm glad to see that the sound is working in a much better manner. What would have been nice is some warning that when you start that every N3V payware whatever S&C etc would be downloaded before it was happy for you to start up Surveyor or Driver. Two points here not every one has uncapped internet access second it might have been nice if the patch software could have pulled in these assets and perhaps the new updates if left running overnight.

Some of the reasons for the new error tags weren't clearly explained but with the feedback on the forums they appear to be not unreasonable.

The error emails that got sent out were confusing. Especially when there was more than one version of the kuid and the error flagged was on an old version. It might have been nice to add in the email that as part of the TS12 SP1 upgrade the DLS had been scanned to the new standards.

Someone wrote that there was some new content in the new S&C but personally I haven't found it or seen any documentation on this yet.

The 'old style' format is the .JA files for DLC content, which is now replaced by a package format. .JA files for built-in and previous version content do not seem to be affected from what I've read though.

Thank you for the answer . I'm going to reinstall the game on the weekend .

Question: When installing a patch such as this one, would creating a restore point be of any use, or is this the type of thing that a restore point will not save for easy return?

Bernie

A restore point is likely to have other effects, including the deletion of .exe files if you do have to restore.

Best form of backup is to have a copy of your entire Trainz installation elsewhere, or install SP1 on a clean copy with no additional content.

Downloaded and installed the patch, no problems except that it took quite a time including time to redownload content packages. Trainz running well no problems noted to date. Noticed that if a junction lever is missing (for example after badly editing a route) error message tells you where this is. This saves a lot of time trying to found out where missing lever is needed.

The first thing I noticed.. (Or think I noticed unless its just a coincidence, surveyor time of day) is the trees going blue in fog seems to have gone! This has been around for quite a few years in trainz and to see it fixed is amazing. Just need to confirm it has been fixed.. But a long database repair is going on.

Can't wait to see the changes to session rules though, my most excited about change!

In Surveyor (at least in my case) when zooming out to get a better perspective, I sometimes overzoomed and the sim would halt for a moment and then change into map mode. Wheeling back in, the sim would again freeze and then end up with my nose against the terrain.

Now, zooming out and back seems a lot smoother and there isn't much or any hesitation at all when it changes mode to/from map back to Surveyor.

I patched overnight, few to no faulty assets added to what I had before I patched - I think. Still running the EDR and have been since about 5:00 this afternoon (it's almost 9:00 now, wish something could be done about the EDR checking speed...), so I haven't been in-game to see what-all has changed/improved, but at least the faulty assets bit seems to be leaving me alone.

Downloaded and installed without a hitch.

I had to do a QDR to fix a problem with "view dependencies" in CMP.

With a 70 GB TS12 folder I have 88 assets with faults and 75 assets with warnings.

Well I've finished up repairing my assets other than those by Jointed Rail and took the program its self a spin.

It's working and that's the good thing.

Speed Treez disappearing is not a good, but that doesn't affect me at the moment as I'm doing other things. Hopefully that will be fixed soon. I like how the menus load faster and the overall spiffy feeling in Surveyor. I had no draw distance issues. The new track marks are great. I like how they now show their influence field. There's still stuff to figure out, but I like what I see so far.

Thank you all for your hard work on this, warts and all. We'll figure out the issues and how to get around them, and then complain again when the next service pack comes out. :)

i would like to say its been working so far with everything i have tried. i would also like to thank N3V for helping us make better assets by requiring better standards. like it or hate it. the only real mistake was not doing it sooner and leaving so much to be fixed.

I would say, now that I have a better understanding, and working flawless now... I am happier. Smoother gameplay, higher FPS, too. I went through all my downloads (backup CDPs) and got rid of all the "excess", which I don't really need. Back to basics for now, just local names like Santa Fe/ATSF/BNSF, Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, and Union Pacific. I will consider CSX and NS content later. I just need to figure out now what to do about Marias Pass X and Sherman Hill. Debating if it will be worth it, as I hear of some things like treez and such might be an issue. Oh, more testing tomorrow.

My thoughts:

Good Stuff:

1. I got the distinct impression it was "all hands on deck" to provide support and staff put in some long hours to help. Well done. :)
2. The patience shown towards those who unthoughtful or unappreciative is outstanding. Another well done.
3. The amount of effort that went into this suggests to me that N3V are serious about Trainz in the longer term. That is encouraging.

The "could have done better" department:

1. Advance notice of the size and consequences of the patch and the updates to DLC content could have been done better. I have a number of DLC or separately purchased stuff and the patch plus DLC updates would be close to 4GB of data.
2. The patch could have been offered on DVD for a nominal cost.
3. The list of fixes could have been published much earlier. This would have given time for those expecting fixes that didn't occur time to respond. Do we have a published list of "known bugs" in TS12 on the WiKi?
4. Frankly, if I were N3V, I would have started a number of SP1 related threads and stated that those threads would get special attention. This might have avoided the plethora of threads related to SP1.

As a content creator I've been more focussed on those issues rather that actually running trains or building routes. But I'll get around to that.

My number one "feel good" aspect of TS 12 SP1 is that Trainz is likely to be around for a while yet. :D
