The General, a US Civil war locomotive

I offer the engine, not a "route".

1. The TS6 version (available) does not work properly on TS12. BUT I do have a TS12 version that I have not released yet, needs testing, (interested???)
2. My engines are standard gauge. Can't remember if the original (real) engines were standard gauge, or a unique gauge of their own. A little research would answer your question
3. Engines in Buster Keaton movie were NOT the original engines, and do not really look like the originals. I believe they belonged to a logging or mining company
4. See #3

If you want to send me a PM with your email address, I would be happy to send the engine above or any of my other (Museum, Texas, Yonah) and have you test them. Only issues are supposedly "known" issues, (no "hiss" of the steam when she's idling, and cannot "grab" items in cab, windows, whislte lever... since a TS12 patch released earlier).

let me know what you would like to do and I'll get right on it. Only my Museum General has been upgraded to TS12, but it wouldn't take a lot to set up the other ones.

The original engines were indeed a unique gauge, 5' gauge, which most southern lines were. They were made standard gauge in the 1880's. The Buster Keaton engines were quite different, and at least one even had a steel cab! They belonged to a logging company, and have all been scrapped.

You updated your General engine? I would like to see it!

It's been some time now, sorry I haven't uploaded it but I wasn't getting any satisfaction that the TS12 issues I face is unique to my engines! Wanted to be sure before I release them.

I did some texturing and modified the engine specs. Not too much different, but "should" look a bit better. Wanted to play with bump textures ... but never got that far.

I'll post on here the changes I made when I figure out what I did! :D

Thanks Very Much :cool::udrool::D
I also used locomotive and rolling stock in Trainz 06 alot. It had working controls in cab.
Is there a route, I remember a website just on the route and locomotives and rolling stock, i believe it said only TS2009 or something like that, but that was when I still used Trainz 06, I think it was about 2009 when I saw it.
Sure i would like the locomotive, does it come rolling stock and other locomotives and mortar(cannon) rolling stock?
Route testing... "DROOLS" Sure if its possible.
I watched the "The Great Locomotive Chase" - Buster Keaton, so many times, because i have it on tape. I always wanted to play it on trainz.

Uploaded ONLY the Museum General (at this time) to: http://www.mediafire.com/?wkjwwjqeebe1165

Give her a test run around the track and report back please and DO NOT DISTRIBUTE THIS ENGINE!!!

KNOWN ISSUES: NOT sure if they are engine related, computer related or TS12 related. Clarification would be awesome!
1. No "hiss" when idling. (TS12 issue?)
2. Handles, (throttle, reverser, whistle lever, window...) USED to work until I did a TS12 update. You get the same? Are there modifications I need to make to the engine?

One of the assets included is "Steam Engine Sounds". I cannot remember if I threw that in during my troubleshooting phase or not, but the General DOES have it's own unique sound. I'll experiment with it and put the proper files back together before releasing it. IF you have the "old (TS06) General, and you want the correct sound, then you already have it and will need to implement that into TS12 content. (of course edit the config file to reflect this)

Also, I did NOT update the tender and this engine is "expected" to use the Museum General Tender. Import that into TS12 content also.

More to come!

Jclinton made a route of it, though it is mostly based on the Buster Keaton movie. Search "Keaton's W&A" on the DLS. I updated it to 2009, that version is on trainzproroutes.org search "Great Locomotive Chase" though I'm planning another update.

As for the updated General, it does look a bit better. The smokebox and number plate could be a bit more rounded(this is TS12 after all) and the boiler looks good, but could probably benefit from a little baking. Also, make the bolts on the smokebox door stand out a little more...

No rolling stock. Just the engine / tender(s). I do have a copy of the mortar, (not sure where I got it), and I know I got some rolling stock at Carson Car shops(?) (Pencil42).

Thanks Springtransit for your input. I can't remember if I made her a TS12 or TS09 engine since that is when they changed the enginespecs. IF I make (made) her a TS12 engine, I'll verify she works in 09 also.

Can you clarify "smokebox and number plate could be a bit more rounded"? (images??) Also "Baking"? I could send a PM with my email if you wish.

Smokebox door bolts shouldn't be an issue, just have to tweak the texture a bit.

Would like to get her properly "dressed" before I let her out into the world!

ALSO are you having the same issues I am mentioned above?

I dont think I can find the files for Trainz 06 in the content manager area. Err... :(
Also the Texas tender on DLS has problems, but the locomotive has loaded fine and works. I assume you made the Texas.
I have not tested The General yet but will as soon as possible.
And thanks.

Don't worry so much about the rounded part, it looks ok for now. As for the baking, I recommend this site:

http://si3d2009.jimdo.com/

The engines and buildings on that site all have baked textures, so they might be able to help you with that.

Haven't really had a chance to run the engine yet, so I'll have to see about them...

Hmmm, if you cannot find the files for the 06 stuff let me know and I'll see what I can do.
In what way does the Texas tender have issues? Can get that to you if you want.

Terry

you "should" have been able to simply open Content manager and "install cdp". Make sure you "commit" the files. Look for "W&A RR" for the engine in the list.

If you still have issues, let me know.

Terry

Hmnm i forgot to commit, im sure if i download from DLS, it auto commits.
but this was not from the DLS, so i will commit.

Im no sure what is exactly wrong, when i downloaded the Texas and its tender, when it came to the tender, it said unable to download or cant find link OR it didnt download completely.
In TS12 it is in the list but the name is in red, which means missing depednices , which im sure you know, as you have TS12

Texas Tender can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?b8imb0xmm5z89s7

Not sure why your having issues. There is one file that is not "mine", that is a dependancy of the tender. It is the wood fuel load, and is included in this download. That may be the one your missing.

Hi Terry

Thank you very much for the test-version.

I had no problems to download and install it in TS12.
In cab-mode, which I' am using seldom, I didn't manage to get the locomotive running.
In DCC-mode I had no problems. Perhaps the steam-pressure is a little bit high, the safety-valve is often hissing.

Kind regards

Swordfish

Unless someone can help me, then that is the way it will be with the pressure. In enginespecs, I put max and min pressures along with other specs. I will investigate and perhaps tweak it so that she does not complain so much! After all, can't blow her up if the pressure gets too bad! ;)

She's "supposed" to have an automatic fireman. Specs are tweaked so that you have to drive it properly, (no sarcasm here), meaning proper throttle and regulator control. I do agree that the steam valve pops a bit, even for me. I had the script written by someone else a long time ago to get the engine working properly. There is a way to turn the "automatic fireman" off so that you have to feed the firebox, perhaps that would help. The museum version uses fuel oil, (as did the original). Make sure if you turn the fireman off that you monitor the water in the gauge!

Did you have the same issues as I do in cab mode? No hiss at idle, and "Driver" window will not open, cannot pull the whistle lever? Firemans window will open and sand lever will pull, but nothing else works. (for me)

To get her running, (cannot have a LONG heavy train! She wasn't designed for that!), (I also have to use keypad since "grabs" in cab mode stopped working!), "Q" releases brake, "F" full forward, "W" for throttle. She should start moving.

I increased the safety-valve-high-pressure and safety-valve-low-pressure to 1406 and 1400 respectively and the steam pressure valve now opens about 185 psi instead of 140. I find this a better range for the engine. BUT I do not know how to keep the pressure from getting that high! (Could be me. Running engine and tender ONLY, no load). Pressure tends to build and build and then vent even when running.

I had to move reverser backward and then forward for her to start moving. Give that a try.

Ok, the Civil War and Museum Generals are almost done (for TS09 >). Levers work in TS12 now, enginespecs are how I like them, other than the engine still builds up a lot of steam over time and eventually pops the safeties.

When I release them I'll mention the fixes / tweaks.

Still haven't heard back about the sound issue, (no hiss at idle). Odd that it happens for me in TS09 AND TS12. Would like to clarify this before I release them.
